Article:	Few institutions on the South Coast can top the longevity of the First United Methodist Church of Coos Bay. Founded in 1857, when the Rev. Christopher Alderson presided over a meeting in an Empire drugstore building, the church is older than the state of Oregon, which did not join the union until 1859.
