Marshfield students graduate June 9

Commencement exercises for the Marshfield High School Class of 2007 will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, in the main gymnasium at the high school in Coos Bay.
Don Blom, chairman of the Coos Bay School Board, will deliver the graduation message and Marshfield Principal Travis Howard will speak to the 247 graduating seniors on behalf of the faculty. Class speakers will include Jessica Criger and Lisa Ellefson.
A baccalaureate service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the MHS auditorium.
Valedictorians for the class are Maegan Childs, Jessica Criger, Lisa Ellefson, Caitlyn Erickson, Chris Gaunt, Josh Hodges, Bryan Looney, Samuel Robb, Taryn Sheldon and Amber Wiley. Ryan Biasca is the class salutatorian.
Maegan Childs, the daughter of Dana and Meredith Childs, is a member of National Honor Society and Tri-M Music Society. She played percussion in the “MHS Band of Pirates” marching band, Symphonic Band and Honor Band, sang alto in Concert Choir and played four years on MHS volleyball teams as a defensive specialist receiving the “Best Passer Award” in 2005. She was chosen as Freshman Band Student of the Year, Algebra 1 and 2 Student of the Year, Spanish 1 and 2 Student of the Year, and Chemistry Student of the Year. She was also named Outstanding Student by the Portland Chapter of the American Chemical Society and has been selected for the National Honor Roll for the past two years. She is planning to attend a four-year college and major in biology, chemistry or pre-med.
Jessica Criger, the daughter of Jeff and Cindy Criger of Coos Bay, has been involved in many of the Christian clubs at Marshfield High School, along with the Women's Leadership Committee, Boys and Girls of the Month Committee, Key Club and National Honor Society serving as president in 2006-07. She was named homecoming queen and September Girl of the Month this year and was on the honor roll every trimester. Jessica plans to attend Oregon State University, majoring in psychology.
Lisa Ellefson, the daughter of Scott and Emily Ellefson of Coos Bay, was team captain for the girls basketball team during her freshman year. She was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and of Crossroads Christian Club for three years, two years as leader. For the past two years, Lisa participated in Key Club and in National Honor Society, in which she served as vice president. She also was involved in International Club and was a copy editor for the Ma-Hi Times. Lisa was selected Freshman Math Student of the Year and earned third place in Algebra 2 at Math and Skills Day at Southwestern Oregon Community College during her sophomore year. She was selected the second-year Spanish Student of the Year, Chemistry Student of the Year and Outstanding Chemistry Student of the Year by the Portland section of the American Chemical Society. Lisa earned her Certificate of Initial Mastery and has been recognized as a member of Who's Who Among High School Students, the National Society of High School Scholars and the National Honor Roll. She plans to begin studying at Southwestern Oregon Community College in business and education, later transferring to a four-year college, possibly Oregon State University.
Caitlyn Erickson, the daughter of Mike and Sue Erickson of Coos Bay, has been involved in volleyball and tennis for all four years of high school. She is treasurer of National Honor Society, vice president of the International Club, photography editor for the school newspaper and a member of Key Club. She was named the Chemistry Student of the Year as a sophomore, was Marshfield's Trig Star Winner as a junior and was recently selected as the December Girl of the Month. Caitlyn plans to attend Portland State University and continue on to Oregon Health Sciences University to pursue a degree in nutrition.
Christopher Darrel Gaunt, son of William and Pamela Gaunt of Coos Bay, has for the past four years played guitar in Marshfield High School's Jazz Band, and participated in the Oregon Coast Lab Band's show band,“Evolution. Christopher has received various awards for musicianship and performed with Evolution at several jazz festivals in the United States. During his sophomore year, he was named Science Student of the Year, and during his junior year, he was named Advanced Placement Psychology Student of the Year. After graduation, he plans to attend Portland State University pursuing a degree in engineering.
Joshua Kenneth Hodges is the son of Jerry and Brenda Hodges of Coos Bay. He has been involved in swimming and track. He served as treasurer of Latin Club, team leader of Cyber Athlete Amateur League and was on the staff of the MaHi Times, his senior year as an editor. Josh has received the Outstanding Science Student of the Year award and was chosen as a delegate to the National Youth Leadership Forum on Technology. He is going to the Academy of Arts University in San Francisco to study computer graphics and animation and hopes to eventually live in Japan.
Bryan Ray Looney is the son of Dan and Maryanne Looney of Coos Bay. He was on the Ma-Hi Times staff for three years initially in advertisement and sales, before moving up the ranks to sports editor, then to editor-in-chief his senior year. He participated in basketball his freshman and sophomore years and played baseball as a sophomore, as well as being a two-year member of the Outdoor Club. Bryan was a key member of “Advance Media Productions,” which involved filming, editing and producing videos of special events, such as “Homecoming 2006,” “Motocross” and “Senior All-Night Party 2006.” His honors and achievements include being named September 2006 Boy of the Month, Latin 2 Student of the Year as a sophomore, three-year member of National Honor Society, 2006 Boy Counselor of the Year for Seventh-grade Outdoor School, Breakfast of Champions honoree and serving as a Mr. MHS contestant. He plans on attending Oregon State University to study international business or construction engineering management.
Sam Robb, the son of Joel and Karen Robb of Coos Bay, is a member of National Honor Society and was a candidate for Mr. MHS. He was named English Student of the Year (2006), Social Studies Student of the Year (2005), Senior October Boy of the Month and has a 4.0 grade point average. He served on the Superintendent's Student Advisory Committee (2005-07) and was an elementary school classroom volunteer. Sam was on the basketball team for four years and was varsity captain, earning a Midwestern League honorable mention. He plans on attending Portland State University, but hasn't declared a major.
Taryn Marie Sheldon, the daughter of Mark and Melody Sheldon of Coos Bay, has taken the most challenging courses offered at Marshfield. She was very active in Key Club for the past four years and served as the publicist for the 2006-07 school year. Taryn was a member of National Honor Society and the Outdoor Club. She played varsity golf for two years and competed in barrel racing throughout the United States in both high school and professional rodeo. Taryn has been a member of the Oregon High School Rodeo Association for the past four years. During her sophomore year, she was 10th in state in barrel racing and in her junior year, she was fourth in the nation in barrel racing at the 2006 National High School Finals Rodeo in Springfield, Ill. She was the first Marshfield High School graduate to ever place in the top four at the National High School Finals and is a member of the Professional Women's Barrel Racing and competes in professional rodeos across the Western United States. Taryn recently received an athletic scholarship from Texas A&M University and she will rodeo for their varsity team. She wants to study with an emphasis on life sciences and human nutrition. Taryn's long-range educational goal is to become a cardiac surgeon.
Amber Wiley, the daughter of Rick and Megan Wiley of North Bend, participated in track and field, National Honor Society, swimming, the speech and debate team and senior class council. She was recognized as outstanding Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 student, 11th grade science student of the year and participated in the local Math and Skills Day for two years. Twice captain on the track team, Amber was an all state and all league pole-vaulter, as well as outstanding freshman girl in track (2004), most improved (2005), Les Schwab Athlete of the Week (2005), and The World's Athlete of the Week (2007). She plans to attend either Willamette University or Grinnell College majoring in either biology, biochemistry or chemistry.
Ryan Biasca, the son of Rick and Lynnae Biasca of Coos Bay, was a member of the Marshfield Chess Team and was one of five chess players from around the state named to the Oregon High School All State Chess Team. Ryan was the lead alto and saxophone section leader for the MHS band and was a member of Evolution, the top show band for the Oregon Coast Lab Band, performing at jazz festivals in Sacramento, Calif.; Sun Valley, Idaho; and throughout Oregon. Ryan earned the rank of Eagle Scout, Boy Scouts' highest honor. Next year, Ryan plans to attend Pacific University in Forest Grove, majoring in computer science.
