Bruins clinch spot at state tournament

Brookings-Harbor's boys golf team clinched a trip to the state tournament for the second straight year, wrapping up the Far West League's regular-season title at Sandpines in Florence.

Siuslaw won the final regular-season tournament by one stroke over the Bruins, 344 to 345, but wasn't able to make up Brookings-Harbor's big advantage in the season standings.

The Bruins finished the five league tournaments with a total of 1,668 strokes. Siuslaw was second (1,727) and North Bend third (1,828).

The district's other team berth for the state tournament will be determined at the district championships on Monday and Tuesday at Diamond Woods near Monroe.

Brookings-Harbor's Chad Patton took medalist honors Wednesday with an 80. North Bend's Seth Johnson shot an 83, while Siuslaw's Eric Hanslits had an 84.

Braves fourth

Reedsport finished fourth in a tournament at Tokatee, the Braves' final preparation before the district tournament starts Sunday at Oak Hills in Sutherlin.

McKenzie won Wednesday's tournament with a team score of 313, led by medalist Casey King's 72.

Reedsport, which shot 385, was led by Cody Savey's 87.

GIRLS GOLF

Pirates win

Marshfield's girls golf team captured a three-school Midwestern League tournament at Shadow Hills Country Club on Thursday.

Stephani Stalcup had a 107 and Teka Steward a 109 to lead the Pirates over Springfield. Churchill, led by medalist Jenny Robets, who had a 97, was incomplete.

TRACK & FIELD

Bulldogs sweep

Several big individual efforts in the field events highlighted a sweep for host North Bend in a three-team Far West League meet at Frank Shriver Track on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs easily beat Douglas and Sutherlin in both the boys and girls team races.

Competing in rough weather conditions, Elliot Adams set a new best in the discus for North Bend with his winning throw of 147 feet, 7 inches, and also won the shot put with a 49-1 effort.

Lane Davison cleared a personal best 14-9 in the pole vault and also won the long jump for the Bulldogs. Paul Guffey had his best throw of the season, 180-3, to win the javelin. Tyler Leman also had a new best, winning the triple jump with a leap of 40-4. He also won the high hurdles.

Spenser Lynass won both the 800 and 1,500 for the Bulldogs.

The only double-winner for North Bend's girls was Brooke Davison, who took both the pole vault and long jump.

Emily James of Douglas had an impressive double, winning both the 400 (1:03.10) and 1,500 (5:01.04). Sarah James won both the shot put (35-91/2) and discus (111-4) with strong marks for the Trojans.

South Umpqua meet

Brookings-Harbor's Mike Chambers won both the shot put and discus in a meet that also included Siuslaw and host South Umpqua.

D.J. Flores won the 200, 1,500 and triple jump for the Lancers.

Several top athletes were limited to just one individual event with a big meet Friday at Cottage Grove.

In perhaps the best event of the day, Siuslaw edged South Umpqua and Brookings-Harbor in a 4x100-meter relay race that included three of the top seven Class 4A teams. The Vikings were timed in 44.3 seconds, with South Umpqua at 44.7 and Brookings-Harbor at 44.8.

Alaura Little won the pole vault and both hurdles races for Siuslaw's girls.

South Umpqua's Jenny Stevenson won the 100 and 200 and Brookings-Harbor's Tabby Reneman took the discus and javelin.

Team scores from the meet were not available by press time this morning.
