Let's see how many people can live on $21 a week for their food and then we may have a bit more sympathy for the poor and low income people in our midst. Kudos to Kulongoski for doing this as usually those who hold high office have been living a life that is very upper class and don't think about what it is like to be a regular schmoe struggling to get by. We always see the food banks asking for more donations to help those who struggle with minimum wage jobs, social security and unemployment, so it's obvious that despite being the richest nation on the planet and the one that grows the most food, we are shamefully surrounded by hunger and malnutrition. This is an inexcusable situation given our bounty as a nation. On the other hand we watch the oil companies make record profits, CEO's collecting tens of millions in salary, politicians racking it in for huge donations from corporations to fund their re-election and while that goes on, we have lost 3 million factory jobs in America, an America that gives tax breaks to companies that do relocate overseas. Is it any wonder that we have such a mess as we have today? Being a selfish person who looks out for #1 and gets greedy has trumped the idea of taking care of the basic common good and this is the price we pay, people living on $21 a week for their food. Shame!
