€ Coos Bay club meets

Coos Bay Garden Club, 1 p.m., today, at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1290 Thompson Road, Coos Bay.

Pond builder Robert Vandervelden will discuss pond design and care. The group meets on the first Wednesday of the month. Currently, members are getting ready for the annual May garden sale at the church.

€ Rose Society in NB

Southwestern Oregon Rose Society, 6:30 p.m., Thursday, April 5, North Bend Housing Authority, 1700 Monroe, North Bend.

The group meets the first Thursday of the month. Jay Dow of North Bend presents the “Rose Growing Made Easy” class, followed by the regular program at 8 p.m. Corrine Clifton of Bandon will discuss the use of sprayers for insecticides and fungicides.

There also will be a large selection of miniature rose plants to be sold to society members only.

Refreshments will be served and the public is encouraged to attend. Those interested may call 396-3709 for more information.

€ Madison school garden

Madison Elementary School, noon, on Saturday, April 7, 400 Madison St., in Empire area of Coos Bay.

Calling all Madison Elementary School families and community volunteers. The school has scheduled a Garden Work Day starting at noon. Volunteers are needed to help weed grass, set bricks, build a garden bed, shovel dirt, spade in manure, turn compost and more. The school is seeking donations of drip irrigation items, including 1,000 feet of poly drip line, 200 feet of micro-tubing, 200 various drippers and other accessories. The school garden also needs two sets of bird netting, 17 feet by 200 feet.

€ Spring garden series

Gardening lecture, 2 p.m. Saturday, April 7, Myrtlewood Room at the Coos Bay Public Library, 525 Anderson Ave.

“Coastal Gardening” is the topic for Saturday's latest talk in the spring gardening series. Master Gardener Diane O'Bryan will be speaking on how to grow plants on the Oregon Coast. This free event is sponsored by the South Coast Community Garden Association and Coos County Master Gardeners.

€ North Bend club

North Bend Garden Club, noon, Wednesday, April 11, North Bend Housing Authority, 1700 Monroe, North Bend.

A White Elephant Sale will be held during the meeting. Members are asked to bring items to donate to the sale and the community is welcome to attend.

Arrangements for the upcoming plant sale also will be discussed. The Club will host its annual spring garden sale on Saturday, May 12, at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. For more information, those interested can call Bev Hester, at 756-7874.

€ Bonsai Society

The Bay Area Bonsai Society, 7 p.m.,Thursday, April 12, in the activity room at the Park West Apartments, 1055 Anderson St., in Coos Bay.

€ Dahlia tuber sale

The Southern Oregon Dahlia Society, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at Pony Village Mall, 1611 Virginia Ave., North Bend.

Society members will answer questions and help the public select dahlias from more than 150 varieties. Dahlia colors include every shade except blue and range in size from petite 2-inch flowers to the spectacular 10-inch plus giant dahlias. Proceeds from this annual fundraiser will help support the club's annual show Sept. 8-9 in North Bend.

€ Rhody Society Florence

€ Kids Earth Day

Lady Bug Landing Community Garden, 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 22, at the corner of the Eighth and Anderson streets in downtown Coos Bay, .

Children and their families are invited to the free event sponsored by the South Coast Community Garden Association and Coos County Master Gardeners. Families are invited to bring along gardening questions. There will be seeds available. Children also can paint lady bug garden rocks and plant seeds to take home. Refreshments will be provided, too. € Bandon club

Weedum Seedum Garden Club, 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, in the East Room at the Bandon Community Center.

€ Orchid Society

Pacific Orchid Society, 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2, at the North Bend Housing Authority Building, 1700 Monroe St., North Bend.

Members will speak and show slides of recent orchid “gypsy tours.” Plans will be formulated for the May 12 show and sale at Pony Village Mall.

The group usually meets on the first Wednesday of each month. Following a short business meeting, topics of interest are covered. Members also show blooming plants from their collections. Beginning orchid growers can receive information and have questions answered by experienced members. For further information, those interested can call 269-5405.

€ CB garden sale

The Coos Bay Garden Club hosts its annual spring garden sale Saturday, May 12, at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1290 Thompson Road, Coos Bay.

€ Orchid show and sale

Pacific Orchid Society Spring Orchid Show and Sale, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, at the Pony Village Mall on Virginia Avenue in North Bend.

Activities will include a display of blooming orchids, sales of orchids and potting material by members. Also, experts will re-pot home orchids for a nominal fee, and there will be information and advice on cultivating orchids by society members.

€ Tomato-Rama sale

Coos County Master Gardeners Association's Tomato-Rama & More plant sale, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 19; and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, May 20, at the Pony Village Mall in North Bend.

The sale will include many varieties of tomatoes, annuals, perennials, herbs and flowers of all kinds. In addition, the group will be selling vegetable starts, vines, shrubs, house plants, ground covers, sedums and more. Kids garden hats will be available Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. Master Gardeners also will be on hand to answer questions.

€ Plant clinic

Information plant clinic, 9 a.m. to noon, Mondays and Thursdays, at the Oregon State University Extension Service building, 631 Alder St., Myrtle Point.

Coos County Master Gardeners host a weekly Plant Clinic to answer questions and help solve gardening problems every Monday and Thursday. Trained Master Gardeners are available from 9 a.m. to noon those days at the Oregon State University-Coos County Extension Service in Myrtle Point. Questions also can be phoned in by calling 572-5263.
