Treinen takes medalist honors with 80 at Coos

Gold Beach's Hugo Treinen recorded the low round of the day with an 80 at a five-school match at Coos Country Club.

Treinen shot 40 on both loops around the back nine at the country club, which is seeing extensive renovations on the front nine this spring.

His total was five shots better than the next best players.

No team scores were kept for the event, which included Gold Beach, Reedsport, Coquille, North Bend and the junior varsity golfers from Marshfield.

North Bend's Jordan Waddington shot an 85, the same score as Marshfield's McKenzie Freeman and Ethan Schade. Marshfied's Kyle Tedder and North Bend's Scott Cooper were fifth overall, with scores of 88, while Gold Beach's five golfers all shot 95 or better.

The tournament was the final preparation for North Bend's team before the five-match Far West League season starts Wednesday at OakHills in Sutherlin. As in other recent years, the top team from the district events earns a berth in the state tournament.

GIRLS GOLF

Braves second

Reedsport edged North Bend by a single stroke for second place at a Midwestern League tournament at Springfield Country Club on Monday.

Thurston's Erica Omlid shot a 77 for the day and led the Colts to the team title with 445 strokes. Reedsport had a score of 487, with North Bend at 488 and Marshfield in fourth at 514.

North Bend's Kellie Holmstedt made her season debut and overcame a slow start to shoot 94, the second-best score of the day. Holmstedt shot a 54 on the front nine and a 40 on the back nine.

Heather Parker led Reedsport with a 108, while Stephanie Stalcup paced Marshfield with a 109.

SOFTBALL

Millers top Bulldogs

North Bend's softball team dropped a nonleague game to host Springfield on Tuesday, with the Millers beating the Bulldogs 6-1.

North Bend got its run in the fourth inning, when Carli Bowman doubled and scored on a triple by Cheyanna Ohlrich. North Bend had just three hits in the game, the other a single by Ohlrich.

“We were hitting the ball, but it went right into fielders' gloves,” said North Bend co-coach Jeri Young.

Amanda Toma pitched a complete game for the Bulldogs, giving up eight hits and striking out seven batters.

The Bulldogs visit Gold Beach on Saturday.
