Bulldogs stay atop 4A sport standings

North Bend kept its lead in the Class 4A Oregonian Cup standings after adding another state title during the winter sports season.
The Bulldogs, who took the lead on the strength of fall state championships in boys cross country and volleyball, as well as the top academic team award for boys cross country, added a state championship in girls swimming and a third-place finish in girls basketball during the winter.
With just the spring sports season to go, North Bend had accumulated 2,330 points. Gladstone was second with 2,174 and Marist was third with 2,085.
The award encompasses success in state championships and in the Dairy Farmers of Oregon Academic All-State Program.
Siuslaw ranked 19th in the Class 4A standings and Brookings-Harbor was 33rd.
In Class 3A, Myrtle Point was eighth with 1,200 points, not quite half as many as overall leader Santiam Christian (2,405). Burns was a distant second with 1,857.
Bandon was 10th, Gold Beach was tied for 15th, Coquille was 25th and Reedsport was 35th.
In Class 5A, Crescent Valley was first overall. Marshfield, which does not participate in the Dairy Farmers of Oregon Academic All-State program, was 28th.
The highest-ranked program for the winter sports season in the academic standings was North Bend's boys basketball team, which was second in the Class 4A boys basketball ranks with a 3.67 team grade-point average.
North Bend's boys swimming (3.66) and wrestling (3.66) teams both ranked fourth in their divisions.
Myrtle Point's girls baksetball team was ranked third for Class 3A with a 3.82 team GPA. Bandon's dance team was second among Class 3A schools (3.45).
In boys basketball, Gold Beach was eighth (3.31) and Coquille 10th (3.26). In wrestling, Myrtle Point (3.08), Coquille (2.94) and Gold Beach (2.83) ranked sixth through eighth.
Several other South Coast teams had GPAs of at least 3.0, including:
Bandon: girls basketball (3.47); boys basketball (3.00).
Brookings-Harbor: girls basketball (3.49); boys basketball (3.20); dance (3.09).
Coquille: girls basketball (3.45); cheerleading (3.38).
Gold Beach: girls basketball (3.39).
North Bend: girls basketball (3.55); girls swimming (3.42); cheerleading (3.09).
Powers: boys basketball (3.29); girls basketball (3.11).
Siuslaw: boys basketball (3.25).
