Nunn has shutout for Reedsport
Tailor Nunn pitched a three-hit shutout as Reedsport opened the softball season with a 4-0 win over visiting Riddle on Tuesday.
Nunn recorded six strikeouts for the Braves, while Chelsea Hitchcock provided the offensive firepower with a double and triple.
Reedsport scored three times in the second inning. Brianna Ekelund doubled in Lyndsay Holden and then Hitchcock doubled in both Ekelund and Christy Holden.
“I was happy with my girls,” said Reedsport coach Casey Howard, noting that Riddle had an impressive win over Illinois Valley in its season opener Monday.
Vikings fall
Siuslaw lost its season opener 12-0 to visiting Newport as the Vikings embarked on a growing year.
“It's a starting over year for us,” said Siuslaw coach Lynette Holdahl, who has just three returning varsity players. “We're going to take our lumps. I'd rather play good teams and take our lumps. Hopefully the girls will learn.”
Brittany Chestnut had two triples for Newport and Katie Millard pitched a one-hitter in the five inning game.
Siuslaw pitcher Felicia Webb had the Vikings' hit, a second-inning single.
Ashleigh Meza had a strong game on the mound and at the plate to lead North Douglas to an 18-4 win over host Myrtle Point in the Bobcats' season opener Tuesday.
Meza pitched a complete game for the Warriors, giving up six hits. She also went 4-for-5 with two triples, five RBIs and two runs scored.
Red Devils win
Coquille's softball team opened the season with a 10-3 win over North Bend's junior varsity team at Bangor School on Monday.
Stephanie Jones pitched a four-hitter for the Red Devils, striking out five hitters, while walking eight, and allowing just two earned runs.
Freshman Megan Meador went 3-for-4 at the plate for Coquille with three stolen bases, three runs and an RBI. Cheyenne Sherbondy also had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in four runs.
Ashley Britton was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Mary Meador had a hit, an RBI and two stolen bases.
“It was a good first outing,” said Coquille coach Randy Miles. “It's only the third time we've been outside this year.”
Until Tuesday, the Red Devils had two outdoor practices and several days working in the batting cages and throwing in the school gym, Miles said.
The two teams are scheduled to play again next Monday at Coquille, with the game to be played at Lincoln Elementary School's Fortier Field. When Coquille's new softball field at Sturdivant Park is ready, the team will play its home games there, Miles said.
BASEBALL
Bruins beat Pirates
Brookings-Harbor had five runs in each of the first two innings and beat visiting Marshfield 13-5 in the season opener for both clubs.
“It was a good win for us,” said Brookings-Harbor coach Pat Berkowitz, who is fielding a veteran club.
Tyler Parke, one of the top returning pitchers on the South Coast, allowed just one hit and struck out four Pirates while pitching the first three innings for the Bruins. After Marshfield scored all its runs in the next two innings, Adam Ehlers closed the door on the Pirates by also striking out four and giving up one hit while pitching the final two innings.
Brookings-Harbor started the game with a bang on offense. Parke had a three-run home run in the opening inning, followed immediately by a solo shot from Josh Pruden. Parke, Pruden and Ryan Lathorpe each had two hits for Brookings-Harbor and Anthony Longo drove in two runs.
Marshfield's Adam Reed was 2-for-3 and had a two-run homer in the fifth inning, following a single by Shane Rose.
The Pirates used four pitchers in the game, which was a goal of coach Larry Willett.
“It was a chance to see everyone throw,” he said.
Riddle edges Reedsport
Riddle's Chad Hanson had a two-run home run in a four-run eighth inning as the Irish beat host Reedsport 10-6 in the Braves' season opener.
Hanson was 3-for-5 and also had a double for the Irish, who forced extra innings by scoring a run in the top of the seventh.
David King was 3-for-4 for the Braves, scoring two runs. He also had Reedsport's only extra-base hit, a double.
Lancers, Lions tie
Cottage Grove and visiting South Umpqua played to a 10-10 tie in a game called for darkness after six innings.
Bo Younker, Erick Whiteley and Mike Clack each had two hits for the Lancers. Younker had a double and four RBIs in the game.
South Umpqua rallied for five runs in the final two innings.
“We showed some heart coming from behind twice, but made a lot of physical errors, and we're young,” said South Umpqua coach John O'Malley, who starts three infielders who are freshmen or sophomores.
BOYS TENNIS
Bulldogs win opener
North Bend beat visiting Roseburg 6-2 in the season tennis opener.
The Bulldogs swept the singles matches without losing a set. Cody Ferguson, Billy Olds, Morgan Gray and Kory Isley all recorded wins for North Bend.
In doubles play, the Bulldogs got wins by the teams of Shanti Johnson and Daniel Leyva, and Taylor Strand and Duy Tang.
Pirates fall
Roseburg bounced back to beat Marshfield later in the afternoon by a 5-3 tally Tuesday.
All three Marshfield wins came in three sets. Brandon Benson rallied from a set down to win the No. 1 singles match 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. Doubles partners Brealan Mosieur and Jeff Stephens also rallied from a set down to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. Josh Bott and Zack Jones won the first and third sets after losing the middle set in a tiebreaker.
“Everyone played hard and several players had to play up as we were missing four players,” said Marshfield coach Paula Massie. “I was proud of all the boys' efforts.” |
