Fire destroys van

Thursday, March 08, 2007 |
A mini-van was destroyed Wednesday after it burst into flames outside of Wal-Mart in Coos Bay. According to the Coos Bay Police log, at about 6:22 p.m., a vehicle was reported to be on fire in the Wal-Mart parking lot, 2051 Newmark Ave. Two engines and eight Coos Bay firefighters responded but the 1990 Ford Aerostar was severely damaged by the time help arrived.
“Wal-Mart had a couple fire extinguishers working to knock down the fire, but it was already a total loss by the time we arrived,” said Coos Bay Lt. Doug Vetter.
Vetter said the owner, Danny Miller, 38, of Coos Bay, told firefighters he had left to go into the store when he turned around and saw the blaze.
Firefighters pinpointed the ignition point as occurring somewhere in an engine compartment, though the root cause was unknown.
“It was mostly smoke damage in the interior, but the whole engine was gone,” Vetter said.
No injuries or additional damage were reported.
