Though Myrtle Point won't be playing for the state championship today, the Bobcats will earn a trophy at the Class 3A state tournament.

Myrtle Point beat Warrenton 40-32 in the consolation round on Friday to earn a spot against Westside Christian in this morning's fourth-place game at Willamette University.

And though it's probably no consolation for the Bobcats, Valley Catholic, the team that beat them on a pair of free throws with .9 seconds remaining on Wednesday, also upset Burns in the semifinal, denying both defending state champions - Myrtle Point for Class 2A and Burns for Class 3A - a shot at titles.

The Bobcats beat Warrenton by making enough free throws and defensive stops down the stretch to hold off the Warriors.

Myrtle Point led 15-14 at halftime - only after Warrenton scored the final eight points of the half - and stretched the advantage to eight points early in the fourth on a layin by Kayla Hixson before Warrenton stormed back, cutting the Myrtle Point lead to 31-29 on a 3-pointer by Brookyln Campbell with 1:35 remaining.

Morgan Grove, Marley Kennedy, Hixson and Krissy Johnston (twice) each hit one of two free throws to help Myrtle Point pull away and Johnston clinched the win by hitting her final four foul shots.

Johnston and Ashley Duey shared high score honors for the Bobcats with eight points each. Kennedy had seven rebounds and Duey six.

Jordyn Holt had 11 points for Warrenton.

Valley Catholic 29, Burns 26

The Valiants stunned Burns a day after stunning Myrtle Point to reach the championship game.

Valley Catholic kept Burns from scoring in the final five minutes of the game, tying the game with a 3-pointer by Jena Sepich and then forcing four turnovers.

The Valiants scored the final three points from the line - two by Lisa Gallinat - and got two blocks by Gallinat in the final minute.

Gallinat and Emily Keagbine had nine points each for Valley Catholic. Jessica Clemens led Burns with 10 points.

Nyssa 39, Vale 38

The Bulldogs edged league rival Vale when Shaelah Musgrove stole the ball, was fouled and made two free throws with 12 seconds remaining in the game.

Musgrove had 12 points and Hailey Anderson 10 for Nyssa, which faces Valley Catholic for the title tonight. Kara Hiatt had 13 points and Katy Lutjens 12 for Vale, which will play Burns for third place.

Westside Christian 58, Creswell 31

The Eagles took out their frustrations of a tough loss to Nyssa in the quarterfinals - when they led by eight points in the final quarter - by blowing out the Bulldogs.

Kasey Kanada, Jessica Monroe and Jessi-Ann Michaelson, who all fouled out against Nyssa, combined for 37 points for the Eagles. Kanada had 17 points and three steals, Monroe had 11 points and 14 rebounds and Michaelson scored nine points for Westside Christian. Starah Staropoli added 13 points.

Megan McMahon had 12 points for Creswell.

Westside Christian, which eliminated Sunset Six runner-up Coquille from the playoffs last weekend, now will try to beat league champion Myrtle Point for fourth place.

BOYS

Valley Catholic 63, Riverside 37

The Valiants reached the title game by blowing out the team that beat Bandon in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Valley Catholic outscored the Pirates 38-17 in the second half as the school's boys joined the girls in tonight's championship round.

Michael Lyon and Andy Haugen had 14 points each and Haugen also grabbed 14 rebounds for Valley Catholic.

Robert Turner led Riverside with 15 points.

Regis 50, Dayton 49

The Rams held off the Pirates to advance to the championship game.

Sergio Rosario hit two 3-pointers in the final eight seconds for Dayton, which came up one point short. Derek Piete hit a clinching free throw after Rosario's first trey for the Rams.

Piete had a game-high 20 points for Regis. Rosario had 15 points to lead Dayton.
