COOS BAY - Snow, hail and sleet finally made their way to the Bay Area.
But it's going to quit. Today. And it likely will be clear by Sunday.
That's according to National Weather Service meteorologist Mike O'Brien on Tuesday afternoon.
The Medford office of the NWS issued a heavy snow warning for Coos and Curry counties and the Portland office issued identical warnings for the northern Oregon coast and snow advisories for the I-5 corridor.
Tuesday's warning called for snow accumulation of up to 5 inches in the valley floors and between 4 and 10 inches across higher terrain such as foothills and the Coast Range.
Overnight lows were forecast at or near freezing for most of the area, too - conditions ripe for slippery roads. Highs during the day today were forecast to be near 40, with a nice, chilly 10- to 15-mph northwest wind backing up those temps.
The weather system responsible for the cold, snowy weather was a low-pressure system rotating around Portland on Tuesday. By Thursday, that system will have moved east.
“It's moving inland and weakening now,” O'Brien said Tuesday.
At the same time, he said, a ridge is building to the west - and that means nice weather is coming, even though NWS forecasts still are predicting a chance of rain. The service depends on several forecast models and they don't always agree, O'Brien said.
“The weekend looks like it's going to be nice,” he added.
