Marshfield's season is still alive.
The Pirates lost rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Springfield 57-53 Friday night to set up a do-or-die game tonight against Churchill.
The Pirates host the Lancers at 5 p.m. to close the regular season. If Marshfield wins, it enters the Class 5A playoffs as the league's No. 3 seed.
“We need a big crowd,” Marshfield coach Doug Miles said. “I think we've got a chance.”
At Springfield, the Pirates played their best game since post John Parrish went down with a season-ending injury, Miles said.
“We did a good job executing things,” Miles said. “We attacked the basket. Springfield was inspired. They came out and played hard. I thought we did some great things.”
Brogan Oswald scored 10 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter for Marshfield and the Pirates shot 7-for-8 from the foul line in the final quarter.
Springfield led by six points midway through the fourth quarter, but Oswald and Rayce Stacey each drove to the hoop and converted three-point plays to eliminate the deficit.
“We kept our poise the entire time,” Miles said. “It was good to see.”
Stacey had 12 points and Sam Robb eight.
Springfield star Miles Haley scored 36 points, despite tough defense by Riley Stacey.
“I thought Riley played him tough,” Miles said. “He's just a stud. He's real physical. Riley made him work for what he got.”
Marshfield caught a break when Churchill beat Thurston 57-38. If the Pirates lose to the Lancers tonight, Thurston will be the league's No. 3 seed.
Just winning Friday to have the chance to reach the playoffs was a treat, Miles said.
“It was exciting because it's been a rough year,” he said. “That was a neat win for these guys.”
Notes: Admission at Pirate Palace tonight is $2 for any adults wearing purple.
