Women's health seminar on Saturday

Women are invited to learn about “Adventures, Adversity and Advocacy in Women's Health Care” at the fourth-annual Women's Health Day seminar in Bandon on Saturday. The day-long event will feature speakers, exhibits, informational tables, a silent auction, door prizes, lunch and more.
Hosted by Southern Coos Health District and funded in part by a grant from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Community Center in City Park, 1200 11th St. The $5 fee includes lunch. Pre-registration is required by calling Mary Kemp, Community Health Education nurse, at 347-1601.
With the help of Melody Gillard-Juarez, director of the Southern Coos Health Foundation, a Susan G. Komen Foundation grant was pursued and awarded for this year's event. This year, the keynote address will be delivered by Toni Mountain, who serves as the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's Survivor Program manager and has been a breast cancer survivor for 28 years. Her presentation will focus on “Protecting Your Breast Health.”
Following that, break-out sessions will give participants the option of continuing with Toni Mountain; learning about “Women and Self-Care” with Dr. Gail McClave; or hearing about “The Hormone Dilemma” with Anne Morgan. During lunch, McClave will talk about her experiences on a recent medical mission in Ghana.
The afternoon will start with a presentation by Dr. Cherry, Oncologist at North Bend Medical Center, who will provide information on “Breast Cancer Therapies in 2007.” The yearly panel discussion will include local women advocates and survivors on the subject, “Putting a Face on Breast Cancer.”
Lori Rodman also will share photos and stories from her three-day “Walk for the Cure” in Arizona that benefited breast cancer research.
Prize drawings and information from local health fitness providers will be available; even a table display from the Oregon Health Sciences University Women's Health Center will be provided by university staff.
A silent auction to benefit Bree's Health Foundation is being organized by cacer survivor Marlene Davis.
In addition to its popular annual Race for the Cure events, among other activities the Susan G. Komen Foundation offers grants to support breast cancer education, access to treatment and survivor activities.
