Shorebird talk in Port Orford
Saturday, February 17, 2007 12:24 PM PST

“Black Oystercatchers on the Oregon Coast” will be the topic of a presentation at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7, at the Port Orford City Hall.

Black oystercatchers are orange-billed black birds with pink legs often seen in the rocky intertidal areas, where they eat limpets, mussels and other invertebrates.

Shorebird researchers Elise Elliott-Smith and Liz Kelly will discuss their recent research about the birds' nesting success and distribution. The biologists cooperated on a joint U.S. Fish and Wildlife/U.S. Geological Survey project to monitor the birds' nesting season with the help of volunteers coastwide. Researchers have been doing surveys on oystercatchers since 1997. It's estimated there are about 11,000 individual birds.

Port Orford City Hall is at 555 W. 20th St.
