A Coos Bay man died after a crash Tuesday morning south of Gold Beach.
According to an Oregon State Police press release, at approximately 11:10 a.m., OSP received a report of a single-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 101 near milepost 337, about 6 miles south of Gold Beach.
The pickup truck driver, Edward William “Bill” Phelan Jr., 56, was heading south, when the truck drifted across the northbound lane and collided with a guardrail. After the initial impact, the truck swerved across both lanes of traffic, struck a bridge over Myers Creek, and swerved back across both lanes of traffic, impacting another concrete bridge before being steered to the middle of the road by the passenger. The pickup stopped and came to rest in the middle of the highway.
Phelan was initially taken to Curry General Hospital by ambulance and was reported to be in critical condition. He was later transferred to Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland for further treatment. A spokesman there said today that Phelan died, but would not indicate when, citing that to do so would be a violation of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
Investigators said Phelan was not using his safety belt.
The passenger in the vehicle, Jeran M. Tibbets, 18, of Coos Bay, complained of back pain. He was wearing a seatbelt. The highway was closed to one lane during the investigation for about 45 minutes.
