One of Sector Air Station North Bend's HH-65 Dolphin helicopters experienced mechanical problems Tuesday night while airborne.

The trouble report prompted North Bend Fire crews to prepare for the helicopter's possible emergency landing at the Southwest Oregon Regional Airport.

According to Petty Officer Adam Schneider, the chopper was flying near the Umpqua River around 6:50 p.m., when a problem surfaced in the chopper's tail rotor making steering left to right difficult.

“They were having problems controlling it so they came back here,” Schneider said, noting there were four crew members aboard the aircraft.

North Bend Fire Chief Scott Graham said about 30 firefighters responded to the airport.

“You can't pull around the corner up there in the sky and fix it,” Graham said. “They requested us to be on standby.”

Schneider said the chopper landed without incident. The chopper, an older version that is being decommissioned soon, is grounded for the day while mechanics troubleshoot the problem, Schneider said.
