Wednesday, February 07, 2007 |
Coos County Public Health has Gardasil available, the human papillomavirus vaccine.
Gardasil is a three-dose vaccine that prevents four types of the human papillomavirus virus. Two types of HPV that can be prevented by the vaccine cause 90 percent of genital warts. The other two types of HPV that can be prevented by the vaccine are responsible for 70 percent of cervical cancer. An estimated 50 to 80 percent of all persons will acquire sexually transmitted HPV in their lifetime.
The HPV vaccine is recommended for females 9-26 years of age. The Oregon Immunization Program will provide the vaccine for girls 9-18 years of age who do not have insurance. The cost for a dose of HPV vaccine for women 19-26 years of age is $135.19 per dose.
To schedule an appointment at the Health Department those interested can call 756-2020, ext. 510 or ext. 522.
