Coos County Parole and Probation Director Roy Wright suffered a significant knee injury Sunday evening that kept him out of the office this week and may require him to work from home for an extended period of time.

According to the Coos Bay Police log, at about 7:57 a.m. Monday, an ambulance was dispatched to Wright's home on Smokey Lane. He was taken to Coquille Valley Hospital, where he was stabilized and transferred to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene, according to a spokeswoman. As of Friday morning, he was listed in fair condition.

Wright said he injured his knee Sunday evening at his home but waited until Monday morning to call for medical assistance. Surgery was performed Tuesday, he said. The current timetable has him arriving back home on Monday, though he is unsure when he will be able to return to work.

“We always work like a family,” he said on Friday. “I'll probably be working a lot by phone. I might be back in a couple weeks. It might take longer. At this point, I really don't know.”

Kelly Church, the business operations manager in Wright's department, said the office has run smoothly while he has been gone and will continue to during his recovery period.

“His absence is not going to have an effect on our office,” she said. “There will be some work he can do at home and he is in contact with the office.”

Church said Ron Whitley, a parole and probation officer, has been handling day-to-day operations, such as signing reports and working with clients, while she is dealing with budget and administrative work.

If staff is ever unsure how to proceed with an issue, however, Church said Wright could expect a phone call.

“He will still be the decision-maker,” she said.
