Of the 48 students who played in the regional Chess for Success Tournament Saturday, only six qualified to go on to the nonprofit's state championship in March.
At the high school level, Marshfield High School junior Jeff Stephens won the tournament and a spot at the championship tourney. Coquille High School senior Nikki Keller took second place, followed by Marshfield senior Ryan Biasca and junior Josh Bott, who earned honorable mentions.
Coquille Valley Middle School student Seth Perkins won the top position for the eighth-grade category, followed by teammates Stephen Mast, who won second and Franklin Smith, who picked up an honorable mention.
In the seventh-grade category, Jessi Ross, of Coquille Valley Middle School, qualified for state. Teammates Julianne Owens and Ivy Hallmark received honorable mentions.
Sixth-grade student Michael Stephens of Millicoma Intermediate School took first, with Coquille Chess Club member Joselynn Smith winning second. Coquille teammate Devin Johnson received an honorable mention.
In the elementary school level, Caleb Owens, of the Coquille Chess Club, won the tournament with teammate Jonathan Logan just behind. Matthew Crim and Drew Piburn, both of Coquille, earned honorable mentions, along with Kevin Sumner of Kalmiopsis Elementary School.
Fourth-grade student Sarai Perkins took the fourth-grade-and-under category, followed by her brother, Josiah Perkins, and Christian Kramer of Kalmiopsis.
