PORTLAND (AP) - A soldier from Oregon died when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee in Baghdad.

Army Pfc. Ryan J. Hill, 20, of Keizer died Saturday, the U.S. Department of Defense announced late Tuesday.

Hill was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, based in Schweinfurt, Germany.

Hill's death was announced one day after it was reported that Army Sgt. Sean Fennerty, 25, of Portland was killed in Al Anbar Province. Fennerty died Saturday when his vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb.

More than 30 U.S. troops have died in Iraq since Saturday.

Hill's mother, Shawna Hill, could not be reached for comment. A family friend told The Oregonian newspaper that she was too upset to be interviewed.

On Hill's account at MySpace, the online social networking Web site, the soldier primarily wrote about his friends and family, though he offered some thoughts on Iraq.

“It is walking on that thin line between sanity and insanity,” he wrote. “That feeling of total abandonment by a government and a country you used to love because politics are fighting the war.”

On the danger of the job, he wrote of wondering whether “that pile of trash will suddenly explode, killing you or worse one of your beloved comrades.”
