The Douglas County Sheriff's Office, in partnership with the Roseburg Police Department and Umpqua Community College, will again be offering a 10-week Citizen Police Academy course this spring to the citizens of Douglas County.
The Citizens' Law Enforcement Academy program is designed to familiarize participants with various aspects of law enforcement, such as administrative philosophy, internal policies and the guiding principles of law and ethical conduct governing the delivery of police services.
The program covers procedures from patrol and investigations, vehicle operations, arrest and control techniques, firearm procedures and communications/911.
Most of the sessions will be held at the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, located at 1036 S.E. Douglas Ave., in Roseburg. The first class will begin March 15 and will run through May 17. Hours will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., every Thursday night. There also will be three Saturday classes that will offer hands-on training and demonstrations.
The academy is free, but space is limited to 20 participants. Potential candidates must be at least 18 years old, live in Douglas County and must be willing to attend all classes. Application finalists will be subject to a criminal history check. Application deadline is Monday, Feb. 26.
