A pile of discarded trees fill part of a parking lot at the North Bend Fire Department on Saturday. North Bend Fire is accepting donations for removing Christmas trees from in front of people's homes or for dropping off trees at the fire department's back lot. Firefighters picked up trees on Dec. 30 and Coos Bay and North Bend crews will be out again picking up trees on Saturday. Some of the discarded trees will be given to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to be used to enhance fish habitat in local streams. North Bend and Coos Bay residents wishing to participate are asked to place discarded Christmas trees on the sidewalk next to their homes on Saturday. Those in Coos Bay are asked to place trees on the curb by 9 a.m., and Coos Bay firefighters also will be accepting donations of canned food to be shared in the community.
