Examples of items on upcoming state tests

Here are examples of the kinds of questions on state standardized science tests that students at the Grade 5, 8 and 10 level would need to be able to answer in order to achieve passing scores on state tests. Correct answers are marked with asterisks.:
Grade 5: If all green plants died, would lions survive? A. Yes, lions do not eat green plants. B. Yes, lions could still eat other animals. C. No, the animals that lions eat need to eat green plants. D. No, they would have no more plants to eat.
Grade 8: Compared to coastal areas, interior areas of a large continent tend to have A. higher amounts of rainfall throughout the year. B. a greater incidence of fog during summer months. C. an increased risk of hurricanes during the spring months. D. more extreme temperature differences between winter and summer.
Science High School Grade 10: Which of the following aspects of electromagnetic radiation best explains why electromagnetic radiation is both useful and harmful to humans? A. Electromagnetic radiation travels at the speed of light. B. Electromagnetic radiation can travel through a vacuum. C. Electromagnetic radiation is energy and can interact with matter. D. Electromagnetic radiation can be described in terms of both wavelength and frequency.
