Gymnasts earn top-10 finishes at state

Three athletes from Gymnastics Plus placed in the top 10 in events in their division at the state championships for Level 5 and Level 6 last weekend in Portland.
All three placers were in Level 6.
Kara Wood tied for eighth place on the floor exercise with her score of 8.9. The routine requires some difficult skills, including a back handspring, back tuck.
Mareyna Karlin was ninth on the balance beam with a score of 9.225, while Braeden Kennedy was 10th with a score of 9.125. The routine's difficult skills include a back walkover on the beam.
Taylor Mauer, Maria Bounds, Morgan Hongell, Emily Neis, Hope Richert and Kaila Tripp also competed at the state meet for Gymnastics Plus.
“It is an incredible achievement and honor for these girls to compete in the state championships,” said Gymnastics Plus head coach Roy Lans.
Level 5 gymnasts practice four days a week for two hours and Level 6 gymnasts practice four days a week for 21/2 hours.

Wrestling results
Four members of the South Coast Grapplers won titles at the Coquille tournament last weekend.
In the midget age group, Tyler Campbell (60 pounds), Wyatt McCarthy (70) and Tyler Wallace (65) all took titles. The other winner was Bobby Catlett, a novice wrestler in the 80-pound division.
Second-place finishers included Preston Luckman (90 pounds) and Cole Smith (55) in the midget division, Kaleb Campbell (120) in the novice class and Kody Campbell (155) in the schoolboy age group.
Bantam wrestler Tyler Post (85 pounds) finished third, as did novice grapplers Tucker Tavernier (120) and Kenny Brown (100).
A week earlier, Kody Campbell and Cody Cook (130-pound cadet) won titles in Roseburg. Justin Brown, a 155-pound cadet, was second. Third-place finishers were Kaleb Campbell, Ryan Campbell (110-pound cadet) and Daniel Combs (135-pound cadet).
Registration extended
Basketball registration has been extended at the Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon.
All third- through sixth-grade boys and girls interested in playing basketball may sign up through Friday, Dec. 15.
Space is available on third- and fourth-grade teams and selected fifth- and sixth-grade squads. Teams already have started practicing and the first games are Jan. 13, 2007.
Scholarships and fee reductions are available for those who qualify. For more information, those interested can call the club at 267-3635.
Sundbaum honored
The Boys & Girls Club recognized DeAnna Sundbaum as the 2005 coach of the season for volleyball.
Sundbaum coordinated teams for 22 third- and fourth-grade boys and girls from Hillcrest Elementary in North Bend. Her teams showed great sportsmanship and tremendous improvement by the end of the season, club officials said.
Sundbaum also was responsible for recruiting great assistants who helped at practice and games. Players learned the value of teamwork and having a good time.
“Club staff would like to thank DeAnna for her leadership and assistance during the volleyball season,” said Boys & Girls Club Sports Coordinator Karen Bauder.
Hole in one
Coos Bay resident Terry Springer had a hole in wone at Ocean Dunes Golf Links on Tuesday.
Springer used a 9-iron to ace the 110-yard third hole. It was his fifth hole in one in 25 years.
Rec Center hours
The Southwestern Oregon Community College Rec Center will be open for special hours during the winter break.
The Rec Center is free to community members for unlimited use through Jan. 7. After that, monthly passes will be available.
The center will be open the following hours:
Monday through Friday Dec. 11-15 and 18-22, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday Dec. 16-17 and Jan. 6-7, 1 to 7 p.m.
Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 27-28, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Friday, Dec. 29, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Tuesday through Friday Jan. 2-5, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The center will be closed on Dec. 23-26 and Dec. 30-Jan. 1.
