DeFazio set to attend FERC meeting tonight

Wednesday, November 29, 2006 |
Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., will attent the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission town hall meeting tonight in North Bend.
FERC is holding two such meetings on the Oregon Coast this week for the purpose of taking comments on whether the four dams owned by the Pacific Corporation on the Klamath River should be re-licensed for up to a 50-year period, or if the dams should be removed.
This is an issue that has interested many salmon fishermen, since it's due to expected low returns of Klamath River fall Chinook that caused this year's commercial season closure on the South Coast.
Some fishermen agree that the dams should not be re-licensed and should be torn down, other fishermen don't. Some residents also feel that the benefits of generating electricity from the dams outweigh other issues.
The meeting schedule is as follows:
- North Bend: 7-10 tonight, at the North Bend Community Center, 2222 Broadway St.; and
- Newport: 7-10 p.m., Thursday, at the Shilo Inn, 536 S.W. Elizabeth St.
