The women's soccer team from Southwestern Oregon Community College tied Lane for third place in the NWAACC Final Four on Sunday.
The two squads played to a 0-0 tie in the match at the Starfire soccer complex at Tukwila, Wash.
The Lakers lost 1-0 in the semifinals to Walla Walla on Saturday. Lauryn Koelzer scored the only goal of the match in the 23rd minute.
Southwestern coach Shaun Kohn said the match was a classic battle.
“If you were a neutral fan in this game ... it would have been just a wonderful game to watch,”Kohn said. “It was back and forth for both teams, just quality soccer.”
The Lakers were unable to cash in on a couple of good chances near Walla Walla's goal in the second half.
“All due credit to Walla Walla,” Kohn said. “They're a very good team. We really fought hard. We gave it a valiant try.”
On Sunday, the Lakers played Lane to the second draw of the season. Southwestern won the first match between the two schools on the way to taking its first South Region title.
Despite the tie, Kohn was ecstatic of the play by his goalkeeper.
“Tamalyn Hasagawa played brilliantly Sunday,” he said. “She played by far her best match of the year.”
The Lakers finished the year with a 16-2-5 overall record and 15-2-4 record in NWAACC play, when they scored 95 goals and gave up 11.
“It was truly a great season,” Kohn said. “
“The five sophmores - Sarah Stalling, Erica Rockwell, Aimee Shelhamer, Lisa Worden and Holly Egan - really did some good things in their two seasons here. They have all five left their mark here and they will be missed.”
In the championship match, Spokane beat Walla Walla 2-1 in overtime when Lindsay Hood scored on a breakaway in the second overtime period. Walla Walla was denied a championship in overtime for the second straight year.
