Baker beats North Bend

Derek Howerton threw for 188 yards and Harrison Collard rushed for three touchdowns as Baker downed North Bend 53-14 in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs Saturday.

Baker took a 26-7 lead into the half fueled by an 18-yard touchdown pass from Howerton to Matt Kercheski plus Collard's first two scores. Collard ended with 15 carries for 162 yards.

North Bend got on the board in the second quarter with a 20-yard strike from Ethan Ottemiller to Shawn Mitchell.

The host Baker Bulldogs didn't let up in the second half as Howerton and Vernon Brose each found the end zone on short runs. Brose had six carries for 73 yards.

Howerton added a five-yard touchdown pass to Levi Isham and Chad Adams cashed in from two yards out to cap a 20-point fourth quarter.

Mitchell found the end zone again for North Bend on a 10-yard run in the final period.

Baker improved to 7-3 and will face La Salle next weekend in the third round. North Bend ends its season at 7-5.

Meet the Bulldogs Tuesday

North Bend will hold the winter Meet the Bulldogs on Tuesday night to introduce the teams for the upcoming sports season.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium at the high school.

The athletes and coaches for the swimming, wrestling, basketball, bowling and cheer teams will be introduced.

Refreshments also will be available.

The first contests of the winter will be basketball jamborees on Monday - the girls at Bandon and the boys at Coquille. The first regular contests are on Dec. 2.
