BANDON - Each of Regis' defensive starters popped their helmets and took a knee on the sideline as the fourth quarter wound down. It was a chance for the unit to savor its seventh straight shutout - a 47-0 win over Bandon on Saturday in the Class 3A quarterfinals.

It was another solid day on both sides of the ball for the visiting Rams, who improved to 11-1 on the season.

“It's a testament to the hard work we've put in this year,” said the Rams' first-year coach Ron Suelzle. “We've having a great year with a very special group of kids.”

Regis entered the game holding the top spot in the 3A coaches poll, and Suelzle's defense left no room for upset. The Rams allowed just 92 yards of total offense, forced four turnovers and sacked Bandon quarterback Marc Rogers four times.

“We have a lot of pride in what we've done this year,” said Regis defensive lineman Jordan Ramos. “The shutout, the goose egg, is our motivation each week. ... Even if they get a first down, we get upset. We don't want to allow anything.”

The Rams preserved a scoreless streak dating back to Sept. 29. They've recorded eight shutouts this season.

Aside from making stops Saturday, the Regis defense also did some scoring. Junior linebacker Justin Sibernagel put the Rams ahead for good in the first quarter when he cradled a tipped pass and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown.

Fellow linebacker Dylan Bochsler followed suit in the fourth quarter after intercepting Rogers at Bandon's 23-yard line. He side-stepped a would-be tackler then chased a convoy of blockers into the end zone.

The Regis defense ended with three interceptions and a fumble recovery.

“Our defense has been the strongest part of our team this year, and they did it all for us tonight,” Suelzle said.

Regis dominated the second half but was held in check for a closely fought opening quarter. After Rogers' threw his first interception, he and the offense settled in for a 14-play drive, Bandon's longest of the game. Rogers connected with Archie Garrett and Justin Smith for 45 yards, and tailback Darren Stolz grinded out first-down yardage on a fourth-and-one play.

It was a promising start for the Tigers but made little headway. Bandon's leading rushers, Darren Hiatt and Stolz, were held to 51 yards combined, and Rogers completed just four more passes in the game.

“We've been a running team, we're not used to passing that much,” Bandon coach Perry Herbst said. “Regis is a good team, and we helped them with poor execution.”

Stolz said the Rams defense was one of the toughest the Tigers have faced but felt that Bandon could have done more.

“We weren't blocking well up front, and our running backs couldn't get by their line,” Stolz said. “It was a hard game. They're a tough team. We just needed to keep our drives going.”

Like Bandon, Regis also had a slow start offensively. The Rams were held scoreless by the Tigers-D in the first quarter but rallied for 20 points in the second. Regis took a 27-0 lead into the half off of touchdown runs by tailbacks Dylan Wells and Eric Derschon, who both rushed for 78 yards.

“This win is really big for us going into next week,” said Derschon, who scored three rushing touchdowns. “It was a really good challenge for us. This team pushed us to do our best. We come together as a team every week, and it makes us that much stronger.”

Regis' 5-foot-11 quarterback Brett Woodley showed tremendous poise in the pocket all afternoon. He remedied a second quarter interception thrown to Justin Smith and completed 5 of 12 for 127 yards. He found wideout Andy Brentano for a 31-yard touchdown pass late in the third.

Rogers finished 7-for-16 for 80 yards.

“I didn't expect to be throwing a lot, but the pass was there for us,” said Rogers, who was one of 11 seniors playing in their final game for Bandon. “I'm proud of the effort we showed today. They were just a better team.”

The loss dropped Bandon to 6-6 in a season that Herbst looks back on with satisfaction despite Saturday's loss.

“Everyone wasn't expecting much from us this year, but we surprised a lot of people.” Herbst said. “To take third in league and be one of the final eight teams in state - that's saying something. Hopefully we can build off of this next year.”

Regis advances to play Nyssa next Saturday in the semifinals. With a win, the Rams will notch the program's fourth state finals appearance in the past seven years.

“I can't say enough about this team,” Suelzle said. “I joined a growing program this season, and it just keeps getting better for us.”
