North Bend earns big win on road
North Bend got two second-half touchdown runs by Shawn Mitchell to pull away from host Brookings-Harbor for a 17-0 victory on Thursday.
The win improved the Bulldogs to 2-0 in the Far West League heading into next Friday's homecoming/hall of fame game against Douglas.
The only scoring in the first half was a second-quarter field goal by James Banks.
Mitchell provided the rest of the scoring with his two touchdown runs, the latter clinching the game midway through the final quarter. Cody Clark and Luke Clark added interceptions for the Bulldogs in the final quarter.
Brookings-Harbor dropped to 0-2 in league play despite a solid effort.
“I was proud of our kids,” said Bruins coach Jim Keys. “They played hard. We could move the ball, we just couldn't score.”
Vikings win again
Top-ranked Siuslaw left another team in its wake Thursday, beating host Sutherlin 35-13 to improve to 2-0 in Far West League play and 6-0 overall.
Kody Thrall had two touchdown runs and Jordan Rainwater scored on a pass from Jacob Mitchell and added another touchdown when a teammate intercepted the ball and handed it to him for a 23-yard return. David Mesa also scored as the Vikings turned a 7-7 tie in the second quarter into a 28-7 lead entering the final frame.
Sutherlin fell to 1-1 in league play and 4-2 overall.
Lancers top Trojans
South Umpqua scored the final 23 points of the game to beat Douglas 29-10 for its first Far West League win.
The Trojans took a 10-6 lead after the first quarter on a touchdown pass from Cody Walton to Kevin Godfrey and a field goal by Robby Perron.
But the Lancers answered with two touchdown runs by Bo Younker, a long scoring pass from Ryan Smedley to Gabe Flores and a touchdown run by Matt Peterman.
Sunset Six
Panthers win
Gold Beach scored the first 41 points and rolled to a 41-6 victory over visiting Reedsport on Thursday to improve to 2-0 in Sunset Six play.
Gold Beach coach Kevin Swift was pleased with his team's all-around effort.
“We threw the ball effectively. We ran the ball effectively,” Swift said. “Jeffrey (Knox) had another solid game. The offensive line continues to get better.”
Knox had a touchdown pass to Terris Blackwell and a 50-yard touchdown scamper and Travis Moore scored two touchdowns for the Panthers. James Taylor and backup QB Ricco Lang also found the end zone.
Patrick Harris scored Reedsport's touchdown.
Bobcats beat Glide
Myrtle Point's defense shut out host Glide as the Bobcats improved to 2-0 in Sunset Six play with a 13-0 victory on Thursday.
Bobcat quarterback Scott Buche had a hand in both touchdowns, connecting with Garren Hitner on a 68-yard pass and scoring the other TD on a 4-yard run.
“Their passing game was good,” said Glide coach Jody Doty of Buche, who completed 10 of 20 passes for 156 yards.
Aside from the long pass and the other scoring drive, though, Glide's defense was solid.
“We did a good job of shutting them down,” Doty said.
Myrtle Point's defense limited the Wildcats to 134 yards.
“They played a real good game and came out and defended us well,” Doty said. “We were 5-for-23 passing. You can't win games doing that.”
VOLLEYBALL
Cruisers fall
Powers couldn't overcome multiple illnesses, falling to host Days Creek 23-25, 25-9, 25-17, 25-17 in a Skyline League match.
“We almost didn't go, our team is so depleted,” said Powers coach Megan Shirley. “This virus has hit our school district.”
Shirley said the Cruisers won the first game on adrenaline.
“We really made some good plays and made things happen,” she said.
After that, the Cruisers couldn't keep up.
“We made a good effort despite being wiped out by illness across the board,” Shirley said.
Haley Patterson had 10 assists, Billhe Marshall added seven digs and four blocks, and Nicole Bittner had five kills and three blocks.
