Boys & Girls Club volleyball season starts soon
The Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon is accepting registrations for the upcoming volleyball season.
The volleyball prgram is open to all boys and girls in grades three through six. Registration forms are located in local schools and at the club office, 3333 Walnut Ave., in Coos Bay.
In addition, registration sessions are planned at the following locations:
n Monday, Oct. 9, at Myrtle Crest School in Mytle Point at 6 p.m.
n Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Millicoma Intermediate School in Coos Bay from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
n Wednesday, Oct. 11, at Coqiulle Valley Middle School from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
n Thursday, Oct. 12, at Madison Elementary School in Coos Bay from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
The fee is $30 with a current club membrship, and reductions are available for those who qualify.
Practices may begin on Oct. 16 and games start on Nov. 11.

Volleyball coaches meeting is Oct. 16
A meeting for all volleyball coaches will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 16, at the Boys & Girls Club.
Coach packets and equipment will be available at the meeting.
Practices may start on Oct. 16 and games will start on Nov. 11.
All those interested in coaching should plan to attend. Those who can't can call Karen Bauder at 267-3635 to make other arrangements.
Million Dollar Challenge
The South Coast Running Club's eighth-annual Million Dollar Challenge will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, on the boardwalk in Coos Bay.
The event includes a 5,000-meter run/walk and a 2,500-meter run for runners ages 13 and under. Both races take place on the boardwalk and adjacent roads.
All competitors will receive an award based on their individual times as compared to age-graded standards established by the Road Runners Club of America and the South Coast Running Club.
The entry fee is $6 ($4 for students under 19) for entries postmarked by Oct. 9. The raceday entry fee is $8 for everyone.
Registration will be held from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at the glass-enclosed structure at the north end of the boardwalk on race day. Entrants under 18 will need a parent or guardian to sign the registration liability waiver.
All proceeds from the event will go to middle school cross country programs in Bandon, Coos Bay and North Bend.

National Martial Arts Day event planned
Reiss' East-West Karate will be among thousands of martial arts schools across the United States celebrating the fourth-annual National Martial Arts Day on Saturday, Oct. 14.
The school, located at 305 S. Fourth St., Suite B, in Coos Bay, will hold an open house from 10 to 11 a.m.
National Martial Arts Day is organized by the National Association of Professional Martial Artists, Martial Arts Professional Magazine and the Project Action Foundation.
The purpose of the day is to recognize millions of Americans who participate in martial arts and to promote the benefits of martial arts training. Last year, the day was recognized by President George Bush, James Scherr, the chairman of the U.S. Olympic Committee, and numerous governors.

Men win Coos CountryClub scramble
Coos Country Club hosted one final night of mixed couples golf on Oct. 1, wrapping up the summer season for the group that regularly plays on Friday nights at the club.
The final event was a rematch of an early men vs. women scramble won by the women.
This time, the men's group won.
The men included Steve Cox, Emery Phillips, Ron Opitz, Mike Bodkin, Jim Hough, Mike Maguire, Ed Metcalf and Steve Woodman.
The women were Sue Cox, Carolyn Phyllips, Donna Opitz, Cindy Bodkin, Cindy Hough, Sherri Maguire, Jane Metcalf and Julie Woodman.
