McKenna returns to front row in North Bend win
North Bend welcomed Kelcy McKenna back to the lineup full-time and beat visiting Sutherlin 25-15, 25-14, 25-16 to start the second half of the Far West League volleyball season.
“It was kind of a lackluster game,” said North Bend coach Les Willett. “We didn't get too excited, and unfortunately didn't play our best.”
McKenna, who had been sidelined with a stress fracture for several matches and then playing just in the back row, had 12 kills.
“Kelcy played all three games on the outside,” Willett said. “It was nice to have her back. But we looked a little rusty. We're never going to complain about a league game that we can sweep, though.”
Cheyanna Ohlrich added nine kills and three aces, and every other player except North Bend's defensive specialist had at least two kills.
“We spread them out,” Wilett said.
Kellie Holmstedt had 25 assists and Tawnya Friese had three aces for North Bend, which is 6-0 in league play.
Marji Maxfield had six kills, eight digs and two stuff blocks for Sutherlin. Amanda Hutchings had four kills and nine digs. Rebecca pederson had 10 assists ad nine digs.
Vikings edge Lancers
After falling 24-26 in the first set against South Umpqua, Siuslaw took the final games, 25-21, 25-13, 25-14 to down the Lancers at home.
Alaura Little led the Vikings with 18 kills. Her teammate Katelyn Stone had 26 digs and three service aces
For the Lancers, Katie Bumgarner had 26 assists and seven digs. Brittany Byce had 16 digs and Amy Rauth had nine kills and three blocks.
Trojans trump Bruins
Douglas improved to 5-1 in Far West League play with a home win in straight sets over Brookings-Harbor on Tuesday, 25-12, 25-4, 25-15.
Cassie Bishop (10) and Alisha Shigley (12) combined for 22 kills with Bishop adding 12 digs and Shigley 10. Courtney Bush scored five kills, Sarah Blankenship had three, and Katy King had five aces and nine digs.
“We came out serving aggressive and got after them early on,” said Douglas coach Carl Bone. “Brookings started getting down on themselves, and our girls just took advantage of it. We passed the ball well and had very few unforced errors.”
Stephanie Kerr finished with six kills and seven digs for the Bruins. Her teammate Kara Miller had two blocks, two kills and four digs.
Skyline League
Cruisers win
Powers edged Camas Valley 15-25, 25-12, 25-23, 23-25, 15-8 in a Skyline League match.
“We put together a good effort and the girls had a much-needed win in our race to reach the district playoffs,” Shirley said.
The Cruisers bounced back from their first league loss, at home to Elkton on Friday.
“We did some great things to win some games and also just played a little flat when we lost some games,” said Powers coach Megan Shirley.
Kristin Clauson was 17-for-18 on the service line with 12 aces for the Cruisers. She served eight straight points to give the Cruisers the win after they had trailed 23-16 in th third game and also served the final six points in the clinching fifth game. Clauson also had 11 digs and four kills during the match.
Haley Patterson had 15 assists and nine kills, despite being ill. Billhe Marshall had 11 digs and seven kills.
GIRLS SOCCER
Pirates fall
North Eugene beat host Marshfield 12-0 in a Midwestern League soccer match on Tuesday.
Kendra Castanette and Stephanie Overholt both had hat tricks for the Highlanders.
Pirates coach Kitty DeMoss was content with her team, which trailed 3-0 at halftime.
“The girls played a great first half,” she said. “Courtney Lanza, Christine Hunter and Chloe Eberlein played well.
“We are still without our goalkeeper Stacey Smith. ... Several field players have had to step in as goalie.”
CROSS COUNTRY
Looney wins race
Myrtle Point's Lacy Looney finished first on Saturday in the Chieftain Invitational at Rogue River.
The Bobcat senior was timed in 19:40 over the 5,000-meter course, winning by 21 seconds and leading Myrtle Point to third place in the team race.
Hailey Huffman was 10th in 21:47 for the Bobcats, who finished behind North Medford and Klamath Union in the team standings.
Loren Linden of Brookings-Harbor was first among South Coast boys, finishing 14th in 17:56. North Medford's Darrell Terry won the race in 16:30. Brookings-Harbor finished third in the team standings, behind North Medford and Hidden Valley
