Southwestern Oregon Community College's Gold Beach Business Lab is offering a series of courses to provide training in a series of computer applications. Each 11-week course is broken up into weekly sessions, scheduled from 5:30 to 8:20 p.m., starting today.

A Microsoft Access class will be available so participants can learn to use a computer database system to manage mailing lists, clients and inventory. Participants will learn the advantages and basics of database software by learning Microsoft Access 2002. Students will be able to learn at their own pace, with structured curriculum and instructor support in the business skills class. The fee for this course is $34.

A self-paced Microsoft Office Applications course also will be offered in a lab setting. Participants will learn to create and edit Word documents and research papers; create a worksheet, as well as embedded charts, formulas, functions formatting and Web queries in Excel; creating a database using design and datasheet views and querying an Access database using the select query window; and creating a presentation using a design template and auto layouts and using outline view and clip art to create a PowerPoint slide show. There is a required book for this class. The course fee is $34.

Spreadsheet Applications will introduce the beginning and intermediate concepts, terminology and application of spreadsheet technology. Students will learn common features of spreadsheet software, its application to many business uses, problem solving techniques and issues involved in choosing and installing spreadsheet software. Tuition for this three-credit course is $244, or $151 for personal interest students.

Word Processing Applications familiarizes students with the use of microcomputers for word processing applications at a professional level. This course will introduce the concepts, terminology and applications of word processing technology. Students will learn the common features of word processing software, its application to many business uses, elements of style and issues involved in choosing and installing word processing software. Tuition for the three-credit course is $244, or $151 for those taking the course for personal enrichment.

Some classes are available at discounted tuition rates. Pre-registration is required.
