Barbe captures title in Pre Run For Kids

Sixth-grader Simon Barbe was champion in this year's Pre Run for Kids.

Under sunny skies, Barbe crossed the finish line in the 3-mile race with a time of 19 minutes, 5.66 seconds.

His time was almost a minute faster than runner-up Connor Devereux, who finished in 20:02.08. The third and fourth boys also were sixth-graders, Levi Graber (22:03.71) and Justin Angove (23:28.66).

Katie Romanko, an eighth-grader, was the overall winner for girls, finishing in 21:44.86, third overall. Eighth-grader Samantha Sutherland was second in 24:07.09, with Natasha Hill third in 24:09.33.

The event drew 102 boys and girls in grades 1 through 8, including runners from Coos Bay, North Bend, Hood River, Beaverton, Lake Forest Park, Washington, Bandon, Myrtle Point, Portland, Coquille and Lakeside.

The first three finishers in each age group received medals and all runners received certificates and whistles. The medal winners are listed in today's Community Scoreboard, along with the complete results for the race.

Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon officials congratulated all the participants and extended a special thanks to the many volunteers, including Zara Aurdahl, Jared Bassett, Tamara Beardsley, Kayley Brownell, Courtney Callaway, Travis Berrian, Amy Deatherage, Steven Garboden, Edward Gayewski, Brittany Hempstead, Melissa Hollingsworth, Kayla Thompson, Christina Holtom, Becca Knaak, Sam Lynass, Spenser Lynass, Erika Mauer, Andrew Messenger, Heather Porter, Lauren Van Burger, Jake Wilson, Susan (Scooter) Zwicker, Regina Moreno, Dan Flroa, Trevor Berrian, Kelsey Bailey, Jeff Edgerton, Jana Sadler, Amanda Keith, Gwen Rogers, Erica Schroeder, Sierra Schroeder, Mark Petrie, Zach Reichenberger and Beth Williamson.

Boys & Girls Club staff who helped incldued Angie Hill, Scott Withers, Beka Young, Rob Miles, Denise Gould and Jack Hollingsworth.

Club officials also thank the city of Coos Bay, the Coos Bay Police Department, Marshfield High School, Coos Art Museum, Puerta Vallarta Restaurant, Thomas & Sons, BNT and Pepsi.

See Jane Run

See Jane Run, the South Coast Women Only Run and Walk, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7, at John Topits Park in Coos Bay.

The event includes a 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) run/walk and a non-competitive 1-mile fun walk. Both events will take place on the Empire Lakes paved trails.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Coos County Women's Safety and Resource Center, which is cosponsoring the event along with the South Coast Running Club.

The entre fee is $20 with a T-shirt or $8 without.

Bowling ‘Demo Days'

North Bend Lanes again will host professional bowlers Leanne Barrette and Pam Buckner for Demo Days on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.

The event is co-sponsored by North Bend Lanes and the Ebonie Corporation.

The company will be bringing balls, gloves and wrist positioners for bowlers to try out.

Four sessions are planned. The first, at 11 a.m. on Sept. 30, is for juniors. The others are from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sept. 30 and on Oct. 1 and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 1.

The cost is $15, with participants receiving a $10 gift certificate.

Bill Halfhill Memorial Tournament

Openings still are available for the Bill Halfhill Memorial Golf Tournament and auction, to be held on Saturday, Oct. 7.

The tournament will be held at Coos Country Club, beginning at 9 a.m.

The dinner will be held at The Mill Casino-Hotel, with a silent auction starting at 5 p.m. and dinner, followed by an oral auction, starting at 6 p.m.

Teams or individuals are invited to participate in the golf tournament.
