Colts beat Marshfield in league volleyball opener

Round one in the battle for the league title in the new Midwestern League went to Thurston Tuesday night.

The Colts beat visiting Marshfield 24-26, 25-21, 25-16, 25-14 at Springfield in the league opener.

“We came out ready to play that first game and played really well,” said Marshfield coach Tammie Montiel. “From there, we just struggled. We made lots of unforced errors and didn't pass well out of serve-receive. When we do that, we don't stay well in our system. We had a hard time rallying back.”

Ali Worthen had eight kills and two blocks for the Pirates. Lauren Van Burger had 15 assists and two aces and Caitlyn Erickson had six kills and two aces.

The Colts and Pirates are expected to battle for the league title after sharing the crown with Sheldon last year.

The Pirates play North Eugene on Thursday in their first home match since the first week of school.

Far West League

Bulldogs get win

North Bend swept host Brookings-Harbor Tuesday night, 25-8, 25-15, 25-19.

Cheyanna Ohlrich had seven kills and four aces. Kellie Holmstedt added seven aces for the Bulldogs.

Stephanie Kerr had seven kills, four blocks and three aces for the Bruins. Kara Miller added five kills.

Trojans top Siuslaw

Douglas set up a big match with North Bend Thursday night by beating league newcomer Siuslaw 25-20, 25-18, 25-21 in a match at Winston.

Cassie Bishop had 15 kills and 18 digs for the Trojans and Alisha Shigley added six kills, five stuff blocks and seven digs. Kati Quimby had 25 assists.

Alaura Little had 10 kills for Siuslaw and Jessica Dodson had 10 digs and two aces.

The loss was the first in league play for the Vikings, while Douglas visits North Bend in a battle for first place on Thursday.

Lancers win

South Umpqua beat visiting Sutherlin 25-19, 25-19, 25-16 on Tuesday.

Amy Rauth had seven kills and two blocks, while Triana Crane added 12 kills and four digs. Katie Bumgarner had 26 assists and six aces.

For Sutherlin, Marji Maxfield had six kills and four digs, Rebecca Pederson had 10 digs and 12 assists and Tawnie Terry had seven kills and seven digs.

Skyline League

Pirates lose in five

Umpqua Valley Christian beat host Pacific 26-24, 20-25, 25-17, 20-25, 15-9 in a Skyline League match on Tuesday.

“It was really good,” said Pacific coach Wendi Valentine, whose team had not played a five-set match in recent memory. “It felt so good. The girls were just so excited.”

Anna Pleich had 26 digs and 14 kills for UVC. Nichole Hill had 29 digs and Alison Clark had 11 assists. Allyssa Robinson had 12 kills for the Monarchs.

Shari Odson had three kills and 10 assists for Pacific. Sam McSharry had six kills, one assist and one stuff block. Alyssa Rush had four kills and Kelsey Gore and Cassie Keeler had two kills each.

Far West League


Red Devils win

Coquille got its first win of the season when Ammon Cluff scored on a rebound shot with 18 minutes left in the match for a 2-1 victory over Douglas.

The winning play started when Jake Johnson passed the ball from the corner to Jonathan Ryan, who took a shot. The rebound came to Cluff, who put it in the lower left corner of the net.

Jeff Veysey had 13 saves in the match and Coquille had 47 shots, its best output of the season.

Bruins win

Brookings-Harbor beat Sutherlin 2-0 to remain perfect in Far West League play, setting up a showdown for the league lead at North Bend on Thursday.

Juan Garcia scored in the 10th minute and Mark Aguirre scored in the 60th for the Bruins.

Wildcats edge Bulldogs

Glide scored a pair of second-half goals to edge host North Bend 2-1 on Tuesday in a Far West League match.

Despite the loss, North Bend coach Rusty Artz was upbeat about his team's dramatic improvements.

“I was very impressed with the way we played,” Artz said.

North Bend's improvement can be judged in part by scores. North Bend lost to Sutherlin 9-0 and Glide beat Sutherlin 2-0.

“We had them on the ropes,” Artz said. “We couldn't finish them off.

“My team is so much better than it was at the start of the year. We just keep growing.”

North Bend led 1-0 at halftime. Sara Bush scored with an assist by Jaycee Richey.

Glide's Cassie Garrison scored about 10 minutes into the second half on an assist by Stacey Morgan to tie the match. Then, the Wildcats scored on a 40-yard kick from defender Jessica Hatley that went over the head of North Bend's goalkeeper and just under the bar into the net.

Trojans top Coquille

Douglas beat visiting Coquille 5-4 on Tuesday.

Jessica Morgan and Courtney Walton each had two goals and Kourtni Pruitt scored the other for Douglas. Douglas took a 3-0 lead at halftime and led 4-0 before Coquille came back to tie the match.

Katlyn Shaw had a hat trick for the Red Devils, who scored their first goal on an own goal by the Trojans.

“We came out really slow,” said Coquille coach Mark Usselman.

Emily Usselman dribbled the ball two-thirds of the way up the field and passed to Shaw for an assist to pull Coquille within 4-2 early in the second half.

Shaw scored on a penalty kick to cut the deficit to one goal.

The fourth goal came when Kaylyn Cluff had a pass glance off a Douglas defender to Shaw for the Red Devils' final goal with 13 minutes to go.

Douglas won with a goal with eight minutes to go.

“Give Douglas credit,” Usselman said. “They're quick up front.”

Coquille goalkeeper Megan Meador made some big saves for the Red Devils, Usselman said.

Bulldogs beat Bruins

Sutherlin beat Brookings-Harbor 6-3 at Sutherlin on Tuesday.

Breanna Garcia had three goals for the Bulldogs. Chelsea VanDeHey added two goals.

Lancers win

South Umpqua scored four goals early in the second half to beat host Umpqua Valley Christian 4-0 Tuesday.

Hannah Moser had two goals and Amber Kunz and Chelsea Duffy also scored for the Lancers.

Midwestern League

Pirates fall

Willamette beat visiting Marshfield 7-1 in a Midwestern League match on Tuesday.

Marshfield's Chloe Eberlein scored the first goal of the match.

Willamette went on to take a 6-1 lead by halftime.

Ceara Drury had two goals to lead the Wolverines.

CROSS COUNTRY

Pacific Invitational

Bandon's girls had six of the top eight finishers and won the Pacific Invitational on Tuesday.

Brookings-Harbor won the boys team title in the four-school meet.

Rachel Ledig and Audrey Moss-Strong finished first and second, respectively, for Bandon, with Ledig winning by nearly two minutes. Her time for the challenging 5,000-meter course was 21 minutes and 33 seconds, while Moss-Strong finished in 23:19. They were followed by Gold Beach's Jessie Denning and Pacific's Cora Wahl and then four more Bandon runners - Melinda Torres, Amanda Berry, Jill Alexander and Hollie Lemerande.

Bandon also had the top two boys finishers, brothers Logan and Cole Scherer, who finished in 18:32 and 18:57, respectively. But Brookings-Harbor runners took the next four spots - Chris Neighbor, Willy Bennett, Alec Rose and Linden Loren. The Bruins edged the Tigers 26 points to 29.
