Bulldogs top Eagle Point in nonleageu volleyball match

North Bend won a tough nonleague volleyball match against visiting Eagle Point Monday night, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 25-22.

“It was just a pretty good match,” said North Bend coach Les Willett. “All the games were tough.”

The Bulldogs played without Kelcy McKenna, sidelined by a stress fracture, and were without the services of Kellie Holmstedt for the first game. Holmstedt was just getting back to town from a college recruiting trip.

In their absence, several teammates stepped up.

Cheyanna Ohlrich led the Bulldogs with 16 kills. Amy Kronsteiner added 10 kills with no hitting errors, while Nina Rudd had nine kills and Kyla Iveans seven.

Carli Bowman, the team's libero, served as setter in the first game and finished with 12 assists and 21 digs. Holmstedt ended the night with 34 assists and nine digs.

“The girls played well,” Willett said.

Alyssa McClellan had eight kills and 17 digs for the Eagles, a Class 5A school.

North Bend returns to Far West League play tonight at Brookings-Harbor and hosts Douglas in a key league match on Thursday.

Bruins fall on road

Brookings-Harbor lost to host Rogue River 25-20, 25-9, 25-27, 25-21.

“We didn't go to play,”said Bruins coach Lori Cooper. “It was ugly.”

The Bruins had beaten the Chieftains earlier in the season, and might have taken Rogue River lightly, Cooper said.

In the second game, the Bruins had five service errors and several other miscues.

Stephanie Kerr had 16 kills and three blocks and Kara Miller had 13 kills and two blocks for the Bruins. Ahndrea Medina had 18 assists and Kayla Hamm added 14.

Panthers win

Gold Beach beat host Pacific 25-11, 25-8, 25-18 in a nonleague match on Monday.

Sam McSharry and Crystal Hawkins each had two kills for Pacific, while Alyssa Rush had two aces and Shari Odson had six assists.

Pacific hosts Umpqua Valley Christian in a Skyline League match tonight, while Gold Beach starts Big Fir League play on Thursday at home against Bandon.
