A robust year in job growth for Coos County continued in August, while Curry County returned to positive job growth, continuing an up-and-down year.
According to a press release from WorkSource Oregon, a statewide public and private partnership devoted to stimulating job growth, over the past year, Coos County has added 700 payroll jobs reflecting a growth in employment of 3.0 percent. In Curry County, the 12-month figure rests at 50 jobs and a 0.7 percent growth rate.
The South Coast growth rate reflects both state and national rates, the release stated.
The increase in jobs nudged the unemployment rate in Coos County down to 6.3 percent while the figure in Curry County now rests at 5.6 percent.
Compared to Oregon's other 36 counties, however, Coos County had the fifth-highest unemployment rate for August. Douglas, Harney, Hood River and Linn have higher rates.
The state's unemployment rate for August is at 5.2 percent, while the national rate for August is 4.6 percent.
According to the release, varying sectors fared differently from July to August in Coos County:
- wholesale and retail trade jobs rose by 50;
- leisure and hospitality employment went up by 20;
- Indian tribal local government continued to rise, gaining 30 posts; and
- federal, state and local government jobs in Coos County shed 50 jobs.
In Coos County, over the year:
- construction gained 100 jobs;
- retail trade increased by 80, half in the food and beverage store category;
- education and health services created 120 new jobs;
- leisure and hospitality employment added 50 jobs;
- local government lost jobs, with state government losing 60 jobs and local education shedding 80.
In Curry County, the largest gains from July to August came in the leisure and hospitality field, which added 40 positions. All other sectors witnessed minimal growth and decline.
Over the year, modest gains were noted in construction (+20), manufacturing (+20), retail trade (+40) and educational and health services (+20).
Leisure and hospitality fared poorly over the year, losing 40 jobs while state government had to cut 40 as well.
