Minimum wage to rise to $7.80

PORTLAND (AP) - Oregon's minimum wage, second-highest in the nation, will rise 30 cents to $7.80 an hour, Labor Commissioner Dan Gardner said Friday.
A 2002 ballot measure ties the minimum wage to the Consumer Price Index, a measure of inflation. It requires the labor commissioner to recalculate the wage annually in September according to a formula.
Gardner said in a statement that the index increased by 3.8 percent, which translates to a 30-cent increase. The formula requires the wage to be rounded to the nearest five cents.
The increase is effective Jan. 1.
Gardner said the state of Washington is expected to make its annual inflation adjustment at the end of September. Washington's minimum wage is now $7.63 an hour, 13 cents higher than Oregon's current wage, he said.
Gardner said that 10 state legislatures this year have increased their state minimum wage rates above the federal rate, $5.15 an hour. He said California and Massachusetts have raised their minimum wage rates to $8 an hour starting in 2008.
