Powers opens Skyline League play with thrilling win

In a league game that Powers head coach Todd Shirley called “one of the most exciting games to be a part of,” the Cruisers rallied past Butte Falls with 20 unanswered points in the second half en route to a 34-32 win.

Jake Stevens did it all for Powers on offense. He tallied 132 yards and three touchdowns on the ground and added a 7-yard TD pass to Josh Selzer in the fourth quarter. Thomas Wagner also was solid rushing for the Cruisers, gaining 85 yards on nine carries.

Steven's first touchdown came on his longest run of the night, a 72-yard scamper in the opening quarter. He added a two-point conversion run, then reeled off a second TD from 12 yards out in the second half. This softened three straight touchdown runs strung together by the Loggers.

Stevens put the Cruisers ahead for good with a 3-yard plunge in the fourth quarter, following his touchdown pass to Selzer.

“We made the plays we needed when we had to at the end,” Shirley said with a sigh of relief after the game.

Powers four biggest plays came late in the fourth quarter after Butte Falls' quarterback broke free for 70 yards on a draw. He was knocked out of bounds at the 1-yard line which put the Loggers in prime position for the go-ahead score. The Cruisers held the line, however, stopping Butte Falls on four straight downs to preserve the win. It was a fitting end for Powers' defense which allowed 156 yards in the second half after surrendering 327 in the first. Defensive tackle Ben Butler led the charge with 21 tackles.

Far West League

Vikings top Tigers

Siuslaw's David Mesa had a huge game Friday night against Junction City.

The senior tailback racked up a staggering 257 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Vikings in a 42-6 rout over the Tigers.

Mesa scored on runs in order of 5, 66, 5 and 81 yards after being called in for fellow senior Kody Thrall, who injured his leg on the first play from scrimmage.

The Tigers were held to one score, a 35-yard TD pass from Zach Gerdes to Bryan Harper in the first quarter.

Mesa's opening TD run knotted the score at six, and Zach Laxague's PAT clinched the win.

Jordan Rainwater hauled in an 18-yard TD pass from Jacob Mitchell to put the Vikings ahead 14-6 at the half. Mitchell later scored on a 14-yard run in the third.

Bobcats beat Lancers

Myrtle Point quarterback Scott Buche had two touchdowns and the Bobcats beat host South Umpqua 21-6 on Friday.

Buche scored on a pair of 1-yard runs to help the Bobcats build a 21-0 lead. Myrtle Point also had a safety and a 5-yard scoring run by Zack Sykes.

Myrtle Point's defense limited the Lancers to 71 total yards.

Bruins win opener

The Jim Keys era started with a victory at Brookings-Harbor High School when the Bruins beat host Del Norte 14-7 at Crescent City, Calif., on Friday.

Del Norte broke up the shutout in the final minute.

“They played excellent on defense, super tough,” Keys said of his squad. “The special teams kept giving us field position. We played in their side of the field the entire night, we just couldn't get the ball in the end zone.”

Adam Ehlers scored on a one-yard quarterback keeper in the first quarter and also completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Luke Rowland in the third for the Bruins.

Sunset Six

Panthers pounce

Gold Beach coach Kevin Swift labeled it as “the most brutally officiated game” he'd seen in his 25 years of coaching, but was just happy to label it a win. His Panthers beat host Bonanza 14-9.

The Panthers drew first blood in the second quarter with a 35-yard touchdown run by Herbie Smith. Travis Moore followed with a two-point conversion run, giving Gold Beach a modest 8-3 lead at the break.

Swift was quick to thank his defense after the game.

“The D played great,” Swift said. “They were stellar out there.”

The Panthers held the Antlers scoreless in the second half until a 35-yard TD pass late in the fourth. By then, Gold Beach had already secured the win with Moore, who plowed in from 2 yards out.

Creswell Cruises

Creswell built up a 22-0 lead and beat visiting Coquille 22-6.

The Red Devils scored in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by quarterback Buddy Parlier.

Toledo tops Reedsport

Toledo's Brandon Moran was a short yardage, back-breaker for Reedsport and head coach Lynn Fulps in a 22-0 victory.

The tailback cashed in from 3 and 9 yards out and added a 2-point conversion run. The Braves' option was held in check as was quarterback Justin Fulps. The senior ended with 52 yards on the ground and 82 through the air. He managed to complete 50 percent of his passes.

Glendale edges Glide

Head coach Jody Doty's Wildcats upheld both the “D” in Glide and missing “O” Friday night as Glendale walked away with a 6-0 shutout win thanks to a lone touchdown.

That came in the second quarter off of a 9-yard run from Jake Platt.

“It was a good defensive game, but our offense never showed up,” Doty said.

Thomas O'Connor and Brock Halter led the Glide defense with 6 and 10 tackles, respectively. Wildcats quarterback Darren Bellouir completed 6 of 25 passes for 47 yards.

BOYS SOCCER

Pirates lose

Eagle Point scored five goals in the first half as the Eagles beat host Marshfield 7-5 Friday.

The Pirates got their goals from four different players. Chad Statham, Gatlin Giorgis, Chris Reinoldson and Leo Kunze, who had two. Cody Leach had three assists for the Pirates.

“Preseason is a time for us to work out all the kinks,” Marshfield coach Tony Preston said. “We came out better in the second half.”

Goalkeeper Richie Richmond had 13 saves.

Marshfield's junior varsity won its match 3-1.
