Slam'n Salmon Derby highlights Labor Day weekend

The fourth annual Slam'n Salmon Ocean Derby starts this weekend in Brookings. With 750 to 800 fishermen expected to compete, this is one of the biggest fishing tournaments in the Pacific Northwest. The Slam'n Salmon derby grows each year with this year a record number of fishermen and women, 750-800, entering the challenge. The grand prize for the largest (weight) fish is $5,000 with more than $16,000 in total prizes for the three-day event. On Sunday a salmon barbecue wiil be at served on the boardwalk at the Port of Brookings Harbor. All proceeds from the event are granted to various salmon enhancement programs and projects. Last year $8,000 was given.
