Central Oregon wild fires grow to 1,000 acres

PORTLAND (AP) - The winds picked up Sunday, but firefighters kept Oregon's largest wildfires from getting out of control.
The Lake George fire in Central Oregon grew to 1,000 acres and the combined fires on Mount Hood held steady at 540 acres. Both wildfires were 10 percent contained late Sunday, said Marc Hollen, spokesman for the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center in Portland.
“Other than having a very large plume, it's my understanding that the Lake George fire stayed pretty much within its boundaries,” Hollen said. “And the Mount Hood Complex wasn't adversely affected (by the winds) much at all.”
Neither fire has a projected containment date.
Hollen said the weather should cooperate today, but scattered thunderstorms could hurt firefighting efforts Tuesday and Wednesday.
More than 500 personnel, 11 engines and eight helicopters continued to fight the Lake George fire from the north, east and southeast edges of the blaze. The fire began Aug. 7 from a lightning strike and forced the closure of the Dry Creek Trail into the Mount Washington Wilderness.
The Maxwell Fire, which peaked at 7,157 acres southwest of Mitchell, was 100 percent contained Saturday night, said Lisa Clark, an information officer with the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center.
