Four different Prefontaine Track Club athletes won individual events at the Track City Classic, the most prestigious age-group track meet on the West Coast, at Hayward Field in Eugene on July 21-23.
In addition to the titles, 13 individuals set personal bests.
Brooke Davison from North Bend continued her dominance of the youth girls (13-14) pole vault, finishing first with a height of 9 feet, 111/4 inches. Brooke was undefeated this summer heading into the Junior Olympics National Meet this week, where she finished sixth.
Lindsey Wright of Reedsport added another personal best in the midget girls (11-12) high jump by leaping 4-63/4. She improved in three of the four meets this summer and also competed this week in the national meet in Baltimore, finishing 23rd.
Josh Frasier of Coquille came out of his summer hiatus to run 9:21.37 to take first in the young men's (17-18) 3,000. Josh's summer training has focused on the upcoming cross crountry season. He will be a senior at Coquille.
Caleb Kruse, competing in the intermediate boys (15-16) division, continued his significant breakthrough in the triple jump by finishing first with a leap of 41-81/2. During the previous high school season, Caleb eclipsed 40 feet for the first time at the junior varsity district meet. He jumped over 42 feet at all-comer's meets this summer.
“One of the highlights of the summer has been the midget girls relay team,” said Fran Worthen, head Pre Track Club coach. “They had a great relay time and finishd second to the Richmond Half Steppers with a personal best.”
The relay consisting of Peyton Babb of Powers, Devrie Dewald of Myrtle Point, Ashton Mann of Reedsport and Wright and finished in 56.52.
Babb finished fifth in the 400 (1:09.40). Dewald set a new PR in the 800 (2:45.85) for eighth. Mann establshed two new PRs in the 100 (14.61) and 200 (29.54). Her marks are high-school quality but Mann has plenty of time to be even better as she still has three years before entering Reedsport High School.
Laleyna Vail, midget girls, ran 1:09.40 in the 400-meter preliminaries for a new PR and came back to finish seventh in the finals with a time of 1:11.59. Her time in the 100 was 14.94.
Moriah Roberge, competing in the intermdieate girls (15-16) division, threw the javelin for the first time in competition and equaled Marshfield's freshamn record with her throw of 105-5 to take second. She finished second in the pole vault with a jump of 10-11.
Shelby Paulson, also in intermediate girls, worked hard this summer and set two PRs - 14-83/4 in the long jump and 31-43/4 in the triple jump for third place.
“Shelby needed to be kept out of the triple during her high school season to preserve her lower legs,” said Hunter Fales, assistant Pre coach. “She's athletic. She took off in the triple this summer and has jumped over 32 feet in practice.”
Sydney Snook, in the youth girls, commuted to the Pre practice from Gold Beach and finished sixth in the 800 (2:38.85) and ran the 1,500 in 5:27.87, the 400 in 1:08.08 and long jumped 13-2.
Francesca Frasier, competing in intermediate girls, turned in a 12:27.50 in the 3,000. Amber Wiley finished fourth in the young women's pole vault, clearing 10-11.
David Eckes, midget boys, said at practice last week, “My goal all season long as been to jump four feet. I'm doing it this weekend.”
David acheived his goal by jumping 4 feet for sixth place. He ran the 100 (16.73) and long jumped 11-01/4.
Lane Davison and Travis Berrian both compete in the intermediate boys pole vault. Lane took second at 13-111/4 and Travis finished fifth, 11-113/4.
Benjamin Kruse, young men, set PRs in the long jump (19-51/2 ) and triple jump (38-113/4).
Frederick Kruse also had two PRs in the same age group - 20-103/4 for fifth place in the long jump and 15.43 seconds for second place in the 110-meter hurdles. Frederick also triple jumped 41-1 and cleared 10-113/4 in the pole vault for eighth place.
Jacob Frasier, competing in the midget boys division, was eighth in the 3,000 in 12:25.81.
Paul Guffey finished fourth in the young men's javelin with a throw of 163-8. Greg Eckes was fifth in the pole vault in the same division, clearing 13-51/4.
