SOCS team wins softball tournament
The North Bend SOCS 14-and-under softball team won the Cooper the Dog Memorial Tournament last weekend at Junction City.
On the opening day, SOCS beat two teams from the Siskiyous in Northern California by 8-1 and 9-1 margins.
On the second day, SOCS beat a Roseburg squad 4-0 to advance to the championship game against another one of the Siskiyous teams, winning 8-1.
They stepped up,” said coach Sean Cheser.
Molly Hockema, who just finished her freshman year at Gold Beach, threw three no-hitters in the tournament and allowed just two hits.
“She was completely, absolutely dominant,” said Cheser said.
“Kate Walling (of Gold Beach) did a great job filling in at catcher (for an injured player),”
Kelcey Cheser and Katherine Nicholls were the team's leading hitters for the tournament.
The team will finish the summer season on Aug. 12 and 13 in Salem.
The group will have a barbecue at Three Rivers Casino in Florence from noon to 4 p.m. today as a fund-raiser.
The group also plans a car wash and slow-pitch softball tournament on Aug. 19-20 at Mingus Park.
Hole in One
David Duble of North Bend had a hole in one during the weekly scramble at Kentuck Golf Course on Wednesday.
Duble aced the 124-yard 16th hole with a 8-iron. It was second hole in one in 40 years of golfing.
