ARLINGTON, Texas - Newly acquired All-Star slugger Carlos Lee arrived in Texas and got a police escort to the stadium so he could play right away for his new team.
Only about 45 minutes after arriving in the Rangers clubhouse for the first time Friday, Lee stepped on the field and singled through the middle in his first at-bat. He had another single in his second at-bat.
Still, his debut wasn't nearly enough to keep the Rangers from extending their losing streak to five games with an 11-3 loss to the Kansas City Royals.
Lee, traded to the Rangers from the Milwaukee Brewers in a six-player deal earlier Friday, batted fourth as the designated hitter behind Michael Young and Mark Teixeira.
Mark Teahen had three hits, including a solo home run to cap Kansas City's five-run second and an RBI single that chased Vicente Padilla (10-7) in the fourth. Andres Blanco had a pair of RBI hits, and Emil Brown a two-run single.
Luke Hudson (3-3) struck out seven in six innings in his fourth start since being moved into the rotation from the bullpen. The right-hander allowed two runs and seven hits, and is 2-0 with a 3.42 ERA as a starter.
While still wanting to add pitching before Monday's non-waiver trade deadline, and hoping to make a run for their first playoff appearance since 1999, the Rangers got an impact bat for the middle of their lineup.
Milwaukee traded Lee, who has 28 home runs and 81 RBIs, after it became apparent that the outfielder wasn't interested in staying there after this season when he can become a free agent. On Thursday, he turned down a four-year extension reportedly worth $48 million.
The Rangers sent reliever Francisco Cordero and outfielders Kevin Mench and Laynce Nix, and minor league left-hander Julian Cordero - no relation to Francisco - to Milwaukee. Minor league outfielder Nelson Cruz also went to the Rangers, and was added to their major league roster.
Kansas City went ahead to stay with its five-run second, when outfielders overran balls on consecutive plays.
With two runners on and the score tied 1-all, Blanco was credited with an RBI double.
David DeJesus then grounded an RBI single up the middle. Teahen's 12th homer made it 6-1.
Padilla allowed seven runs on a season-high nine hits over 3 2-3 innings. He lost consecutive starts for only the second time this season.
Angels 8, Red Sox 3
BOSTON - Kelvim Escobar pitched six solid innings to win for only the second time in 12 starts, and Garret Anderson went 3-for-4 with two hits in the Angels' six-run seventh.
In his second start since going on the disabled list with right elbow inflammation, Escobar (7-9) allowed two runs on six hits and two walks, striking out eight in six innings. Howie Kendrick was 3-for-5 with three RBIs to help the Angels, who sent 11 batters to the plate in the seventh, improve to 18-5 in July.
Jon Lester (5-1) took his first career loss, giving up five runs and 10 hits while striking out two in 6 1-3 innings. The rookie left-hander brought a 2-1 lead into the seventh, but gave up singles to Anderson and Tim Salmon to start the inning.
Yankees 6, Devil Rays 0
NEW YORK - Chien-Ming Wang shut down Tampa Bay for the second time this month, pitching a two-hitter for his first career shutout to lead the New York Yankees over the Devil Rays 6-0 Friday night.
Wang (12-4) struck out one and walked two to win his fourth straight start and earn his second career complete game. The sinkerball pitcher recorded 18 outs on grounders.
The Devil Rays have lost 10 straight road games since they beat Washington 11-1 on June 30.
Bernie Williams homered, Derek Jeter had three hits and Alex Rodriguez reached base three times for the Yankees, who have won four straight and five of six.
The Yankees had no problems with Devil Rays starter Tim Corcoran (4-2), who struggled with his control. Rodriguez hit a two-out RBI single in the first and Jeter slashed a two-run single into right field in the second to make it 3-0.
White Sox 6, Orioles 4
BALTIMORE - Ross Gload hit a grand slam in the ninth inning off Chris Ray, ruining Erik Bedard's bid to win his eighth consecutive start .
Gload entered in the sixth inning as a replacement for Paul Konerko, who bruised his left shin when he fouled a pitch off of it in the fifth. The seldom-used Gload came in with six RBIs in 43 games.
But he became a surprise star in the ninth, which started with Baltimore up 4-2.
The White Sox used two singles and an intentional walk to load the bases with one out against Ray (1-3), who had 26 saves in 27 chances. With the count full, Gload lifted a flyball into the seats in left.
The victory ended a three-game skid for the White Sox, who came in with seven losses in their last eight games.
Matt Thornton (4-1) got the last out in the eighth and Bobby Jenks worked the ninth for his 27th save.
Indians 1, Mariners 0
CLEVELAND - Jeremy Sowers pitched his second consecutive shutout and Shin-Soo Choo hit his first career homer in his Cleveland debut.
Choo, acquired Wednesday from Seattle for first baseman Ben Broussard, hit a 3-0 pitch from Felix Hernandez (9-9) over the wall in left-center with two outs in the sixth to put Cleveland up 1-0.
Meanwhile, Sowers (3-3) allowed only five singles as Cleveland won for just the sixth time in its last 19 games. Seattle lost ground in the tight AL West race with its second loss in six games.
Sowers walked one and struck out three, six days after tossing a four-hitter and not allowing a runner to second base in an 11-0 win over Minnesota. The left-hander, who went 9-1 with a 1.39 ERA at Triple-A Buffalo, has not allowed an extra-base hit or a run in his last 18 inninngs.
Tigers 3, Twins 2, 10 innings
MINNEAPOLIS - Craig Monroe's sharp single down the third-base line in the 10th inning lifted Detroit past streaking Minnesota.
The Twins lost for only the ninth time in their last 43 games and fell 9 1/2 games behind the Tigers in the AL Central. They're now 1 1/2 games back of the Yankees and one game behind the White Sox in the wild-card race.
Chris Shelton singled off Juan Rincon (3-1) and took second on a sacrifice bunt by Vance Wilson. After Curtis Granderson struck out, Placido Polanco reached on a high-bouncing single to shortstop. Then came the hit by Monroe.
Todd Jones pitched the 10th for his 28th save, preserving a victory for Fernando Rodney (5-3).
Detroit's Zach Miner stayed even with fellow rookie Francisco Liriano, who tied his career best with 12 strikeouts and allowed only three hits and two runs in eight innings - but was stuck with a no-decision.
Blue Jays 4, Athletics 3
OAKLAND, Calif. - Alex Rios drove in two runs in his return from the DL and B.J. Ryan recorded a two-inning save, leading the Toronto Blue Jays to a 4-3 victory Friday night that dropped Oakland into second place.
Ryan started the eighth inning for Toronto and loaded the bases on two singles and a one-out intentional walk. The hard-throwing closer got Mark Ellis to ground into a double play and worked a hitless ninth for his 25th save in 28 chances.
Frank Thomas cut the lead to 4-3 for Oakland with his 471st career home run, a solo shot in the sixth off relief pitcher Scott Downs (5-1). Thomas is four homers shy of Willie Stargell and Stan Musial for 23rd all-time.
Ellis added two RBI as the A's lost their fourth game in the last six and fell a half game behind first-place Los Angeles in the AL West.
Oakland starter Esteban Loaiza (4-7) failed to last six innings for his fifth straight start. After giving up four runs on eight hits, he now has a 7.40 ERA (20 runs in 24 1-3 innings) over that span. Loaiza walked two and struck out three.
Toronto starter Shaun Marcum, in his first road start, lasted 4 2-3 innings. He gave up two runs on five hits, walked two and struck out four.
Rios gave Toronto a 1-0 lead in the fourth with a single to score Troy Glaus, who doubled to lead off the inning.
Ellis put the As on top with his two-run single in the sixth.
A three-run rally in the sixth gave the Blue Jays a 4-2 edge and ended Loaiza's night early for the fifth straight start. Rios and John McDonald singled home runs and Vernon Wells, who singled to extend his hitting streak to a season-high 13 games, scored when Milton Bradley misplayed Glaus' single. |
