The state Department of Land Conservation and Development announced Tuesday it's sending almost $130,000 in grants to the South Coast. The money will pay for dock work at Bandon, planning and a computer mapping system in Curry County.

In Coos County, the Port of Bandon is to receive $19,945 to replace 12-year-old boarding floats at the sport boat launch ramp, the press release said. In 2004, the port received a similar grant for the meandering walkway along Front Street.

The Curry County funding comes from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which funnels federal coastal planning assistance grants through DLCD. It will pay, through a series of grants, for a comprehensive geographic information system and planning. The money is going to:

- Port Orford: $30,000 for Phase 2 of a special-area comprehensive refinement plan;

- Port Orford: $11,468 to build city GIS capacity as part of county-wide GIS;

- Gold Beach: $6,532 to build city GIS capacity as part of county-wide GIS;

- Brookings: $10,000 to expand city GIS capacity and participate in county-wide GIS;

- Curry County: $30,000 for comprehensive planning of the Harbor Hills and Harbor Bench urban growth areas; and

- Curry County: $22,000 to purchase equipment needed to complete an online, county-wide, GIS system.

“Coastal local governments need all the help they can get in managing development pressures and protecting our coastal heritage,” DLCD Director Lane Shetterly said of the grant program.

“Local governments are strapped for cash and these projects simply couldn't happen without outside funds. I'm pleased that we found a way to fund them all.”
