NL: Pads stymie Nationals, win third straight on road
Saturday, July 8, 2006 12:49 PM PDT

WASHINGTON - Adrian Gonzalez had three hits, including a home run, and San Diego won its third straight game, a 3-2 victory over Washington on Friday night.

Woody Williams (4-1) pitched 5 1-3 innings for the win, but the Nationals' tired bullpen was perhaps a bigger factor following two high-scoring nights at RFK Stadium. With few fresh arms available, Washington manager Frank Robinson allowed laboring starter Ramon Ortiz to bat - and strike out - with the bases loaded in the fifth inning.

Gonzalez's 13th home run - a solo shot to deep right-center in the fourth - made it 1-0 and the Padres added two more runs in the fifth.

Ortiz (6-7) went 6 2-3 innings, allowing nine hits and walking four. Washington's bullpen had worked 17 1-3 innings in 18-9 and 8-7 games the previous two nights.

Williams allowed two runs and six hits. Three relievers shut out the Nationals the rest of the way with Trevor Hoffman pitching the ninth for his 23rd save.

Pirates 3, Phillies 2

PHILADELPHIA - Ian Snell allowed three hits over seven innings and Pittsburgh snapped a three-game losing streak.

Jason Bay and Freddy Sanchez, Pittsburgh's selections for next week's All-Star game, each drove in a run in the first inning. The Pirates, who have lost seven straight series, improved to 10-34 away from Pittsburgh, the worst road record in the major leagues.

Snell (8-6) stopped a personal three-game losing streak, recording his first win since June 10. He held the Phillies to one run with six strikeouts and three walks.

Marlins 7, Mets 3

NEW YORK - Dontrelle Willis hit a grand slam and pitched effectively into the eighth inning for Florida.

Willis' fourth career homer, and first this season, highlighted Florida's six-run fourth. It also was the first grand slam hit by the Marlins this season. Florida, which has scored 32 runs in the past three games, won for the second time in seven tries and snapped the Mets' three-game winning streak.

New York's All-Star shortstop, Jose Reyes, left in the seventh inning with a cut on his left pinky. He appeared to get spiked on a headfirst slide into first base.

Willis (6-7) allowed nine hits, struck out nine and walked five in 7 1-3 innings. He ran his career record against the Mets to 9-2 with a 2.08 ERA.

Reds 10, Braves 5

ATLANTA - Cincinnati put a decisive end to its six-game losing streak, scoring eight runs in the second inning.

The 10 hits in an inning were the most in 17 years for the Reds, and the eight runs were their most this season. They opened the inning with six straight hits to knock Braves starter Horacio Ramirez out of the game.

Cincinnati had 16 hits in a 14-run first inning on Aug. 3, 1989, against Houston, the most in the major leagues since 1900.

Adam Dunn had a two-run single and Rich Aurilia hit a two-run homer as the Reds sent 13 batters to the plate in the big inning.

Cubs 7, Brewers 2

MILWAUKEE - Chicago's Carlos Zambrano allowed one run over six innings to win his fifth straight decision.

Zambrano (8-3) struck out six to increase his National League-leading total to 124. The right-hander gave up five hits and walked three.

Aramis Ramirez gave the Cubs a 1-0 lead in the first when his single drove in Juan Pierre, who had doubled for the first of his three hits. It was Ramirez's team-leading 50th RBI this season and the 600th of his career.

Cardinals 8, Astros 2

HOUSTON - Jason Marquis earned his 11th win to tie for the National League lead and pinch-hitter John Rodriguez homered for St. Louis.

Gary Bennett added three hits and an RBI for the Cardinals. Marquis (11-6) allowed two runs and six hits in 7 2-3 innings, striking out four and walking two. Jason Isringhausen got four outs for his league-leading 26th save.

Houston starter Wandy Rodriguez (9-6) went five innings, giving up seven hits and four runs. He was replaced by Fernando Nieve, who gave up Rodriguez's homer in the seventh, his first of the season.

Dodgers 9, Giants 7

LOS ANGELES - Nomar Garciaparra's tie-breaking, two-run homer in the eighth inning led Los Angeles.

Barry Bonds gave the Giants a 5-4 lead in the third inning with a three-run homer, the 720th of his career and his first since June 24, a span of 25 at-bats. Bonds, who is 35 home runs behind all-time leader Hank Aaron, added an RBI single in the ninth.

Garciaparra drove an 0-2 pitch from Jeremy Accardo (1-3) into the bullpen in left with one out in the eighth. It was his 11th homer of the season and it broke a 6-6 tie. Cesar Izturis made it 9-6 with an RBI single, his third hit.

Diamondbacks 4, Rockies 3

DENVER - Jeff DaVanon hit a two-run homer and Craig Counsell added two RBIs after being dropped to eighth in the lineup to lead Arizona to a rain-delayed victory.

Brandon Medders (2-2) threw two strong innings of relief to help Arizona end a three-game skid.

Batting leadoff for the eighth time this year, DaVanon hit his fourth home run. Counsell, who was 4-for-35 in his previous nine games, drove in runs with a single and a groundout.

The game was delayed for 2 hours, 39 minutes in the fifth inning. An estimated 2,000 fans of the original crowd of 26,313 remained after the delay

Byung-Hyun Kim (5-5) took the loss, giving up four runs - three earned - and five hits in 4 2-3 innings. Todd Helton, J.D. Closser and Kim each drove in a run for Colorado.
