Workplace safety training offered

The Department of Consumer and Business Services, Occupational Safety and Health Division will be offering two days of free training sessions on workplace safety and health topics on July 11 and 12 at Southwestern Oregon Community College, 1988 Newmark Ave., in Coos Bay.
The first class, from 8 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, July 11, will be “Safety and Health Management: The Basics.” The class is designed to be an overview about the interrelated elements of an effective safety management system. The instructor will provide a model written safety and health plan that can be incorporated into operations at the workplace.
From 1 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, “Safety and the Supervisor” will introduce participants to five general safety supervision responsibilities contained in Oregon OSHA regulations: demonstrating leadership, providing resources, training, oversight and accountability. Emphasizes “tough-caring” leadership to effectively support safe behaviors and conditions. Content includes the difference between “tough-controlling” and “tough-caring” leadership, providing effective safety education and training, evaluating performance and administering effective discipline, hazard identification and control, accident investigation, and costs and benefits of taking corrective action.
From 8 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, July 12, “Safety Committee Meeting Management” will give safety committee members, especially new members, insight into their roles and how important safety committees are to building safer workplaces. The class addresses effective meeting management, problem-solving, writing recommendations and reviews safety rules that apply in all Oregon workplaces. This workshop meets Oregon OSHA basic rule requirements for safety committee training.
From 1 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, “Incentive and Recognition Programs” will address positive recognition in the workshop, motivating the safety program beyond basic Oregon OSHA compliance, and designing effective incentive and recognition programs.
