How to become a candidate in city elections

Thursday, June 29, 2006 |
General elections will be held in November, and on the ballot in Coos Bay will be the mayor's post and three City Council positions.
To run for a seat on the council or for the mayor's post, a candidate must:
- be a Coos Bay resident for more than a year; and
- be a registered voter.
To declare candidacy, some paperwork is required. According to Deputy Recorder Joyce Jansen, candidates can either pay a $25 declaration fee or complete a petition with 150 signatures of registered voters living inside the city limits. The petition method takes longer, as the Coos County Clerk will have to verify all the signatures, she said.
To get more information or to request an elections packet, those interested can contact Jansen at 269-8915.
