Breaking the bank

At a recent long-range facilities plan meeting, the Coos Bay School Board Facilities Committee met with architects and consultants from Portland-based DLR Group. After surveying the district's school buildings, the group recommended $24 million in immediate repairs.
Some key repairs and the total cost by school:
- Bunker Hill Elementary: upgrade mechanical systems, replace asphalt and replace exterior doors and hardware - $1.4 million.
- Blossom Gulch Elementary: replace exterior windows, repaint interior and replace part of roof -
$2.2 million.
- Eastside Elementary: replace exterior doors and hardware, upgrade electrical service and ADA upgrades - $2.9 million.
- Madison Elementary: ADA upgrades, partial roof replacement and patching and resealing asphalt -
$1.2 million.
- Millicoma Intermediate: install an elevator, replace exterior windows and replace exterior siding - $2.2 million.
- Sunset Middle School: replace roof, repaint building and replace ceiling tile - $2.8 million.
- Harding Learning Center: install elevator, replace exterior windows and replace exterior siding -
$4.3 million.
- Marshfield High School: replace roof, replace fire stairs and add elevator - $9.8 million.
- Athletic Complex: resurface track and replace lighting - $417,100
- Milner Crest Education Center (administration building): replace exterior windows and doors, and patch asphalt - $101,900
- Maintenance Building: patch asphalt and recoat roof - $26,400
- Transportation Building: replace siding, repaint building and replace exterior doors and hardware - $53,700.
Next meeting
The committee plans to meet again at 5 p.m. on July 27 at Milner Crest for a board workshop to prioritize repairs before meeting with Higgins and Nevis again in August. |
