No connection to the Adventist Church

Many people in this community recently received a copy of a sensationalistic and controversial book titled, “The Secret Terrorists,” by author Bill Hughes. The World (May 6) mistakenly identified the sponsors of this distribution as “a local Seventh-day Adventist Church.”

The individuals who are responsible for mailing this book and author Bill Hughes are not members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church or representative of its beliefs and practices. The group calling themselves “Historic Adventists,” along with author Hughes, while they may falsely call themselves “Adventists,” are not associated with or recognized by the official Seventh-day Adventist Church.

The Coquille Seventh-day Adventist Church knew nothing of the mailing of this book until it appeared in mailboxes and, along with Seventh-day Adventists worldwide, is in direct opposition to this privately printed book and its distribution.

The meetings referred to in The World article, which are scheduled to take place at the Coos County Fairgrounds this summer, also were mistakenly identified as being conducted by Seventh-day Adventists. While some individuals connected with these meetings may falsely claim otherwise, the sponsoring group and the featured speakers are not in any way recognized by or associated with the Seventh-day Adventist organization.

As leaders of the organized Seventh-day Adventist Church in this area, we want to clarify that we do not approve of the distribution of material so blatantly speculative and directed at instilling hatred for any class of people as that found in the publication, “The Secret Terrorists,” nor do we associate ourselves with or approve of the summer meetings on the fairgrounds.

As Seventh-day Adventists, we believe in proclaiming Jesus' love and his soon-coming, along with promoting a lifestyle that results from a relationship with him. We observe the seventh day sabbath as a special time for communion with the God of Creation, who set this day aside during creation week as a special time to remember his created works. We take our stand on the Protestant principle of taking the Bible and the Bible only as our creed. Rather than dwelling on everything that is negative in our world, we believe in the biblical principle, “Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Philippians 4:8 (NRSV)

Our services are Bible-based, Christ-centered and inspirational. Our Coquille congregation averages more than 100 participating in weekly worship services, and among that number are several of other faiths who enjoy our positive, uplifting study and worship services and our loving Christian fellowship.

Seventh-day Adventists have presented a respected, viable, community-oriented presence in Coquille and the surrounding communities since 1882, with their first church building erected in Coquille in 1904. The current Coquille Seventh-day Adventist Church is located at the west end of Coquille on state Highway 42. A not-for-profit Christian radio station is housed in the church and broadcasts 24-hour inspirational and lifestyle programming to the Coquille Valley and beyond. An active Community Services Center provides food, clothing and assistance for those in need. The beautiful sanctuary has, over the years, hosted the Community Christmas Choir and Bell Choir as well as musical groups and artists from all faiths. The Fellowship Center has provided meeting space for health classes and public health screenings, WOW Bible study, vacation Bible schools, and many other community events.

We invite you to discover who we really are and we believe by worshiping with us on Saturday mornings, listening to KLYF 100.7 FM and checking out our Web site at www.coquille.netadventist.org.

The unfortunate and erroneous associating of our name with a radical group claiming connection with us has fostered misunderstandings that we are hopeful will soon disappear as we continue to proclaim the love of God and the soon coming of Jesus in the Coquille Valley.
