Boulder closes Toketee Falls trail

Saturday, May 06, 2006 |
TOKETEE FALLS (AP) - A boulder crashed through a bridge that connects the Toketee Falls hiking trail with a viewing deck, forcing the Umpqua National Forest to close the popular trail.
A hiker reported the crash to Diamond Lake Ranger district officials late Thursday afternoon. The boulder took a 20-foot chunk from the bridge, leaving behind scattered boards and railings.
The Forest Service will assess the damage before determining how to reopen the trail. Officials said they don't expect it to reopen anytime soon.
Recreation officer John Sloan said hikers can still visit other popular waterfalls along the North Umpqua River, such as Watson Falls, Yakso Falls and Fall Creek Falls.
